Georgia vs Georgia Tech College Basketball Betting Preview

These are two teams I consider potential sleepers in their respective conferences.

Georgia lost four of its top five scorers from last season's 20-win squad, but it did return Silas Demary Jr. (third-leading scorer) and Blue Cain.

The Bulldogs also added five-star freshman Asa Newell — who is already making a major mark by averaging 17.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game across three outings — Vanderbilt transfer Tyrin Lawrence and Clemson transfer RJ Godfrey.

Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets have three of their top five scorers back (Baye Ndongo, Kowacie Reeves Jr., Naithan George) from a team that upset Duke, Clemson and North Carolina in 2023-24. They also added Javian McCollum from Oklahoma and fifth-year big Luke O'Brien from Colorado.

Both of these teams have a common opponent so far this season in North Florida. Georgia Tech allowed 105 points to the Ospreys to become the second power-conference team (South Carolina) to lose to the ASUN squad. Georgia snapped North Florida's hot start, though, winning by 13 points.

Because of those results, one might say that the Bulldogs are a significantly better team early in the season.

But I'm not buying that, and here's why.

First, returning production is almost always more important than freshmen and newcomers in college basketball, especially early in the season. Georgia ranks 348th in returning production, while Georgia Tech is 222nd in the same category, according to our expert Collin Wilson.

Second, this is the Bulldogs' first road game of the season with that lacking returning production. This is a rivalry game and the home crowd/gym familiarity will surely be a factor in favor of Georgia Tech.

Finally, I don't expect George — one of Georgia Tech's best players and someone who is supposed to take another step this season — to continue to shoot this poorly; he shot 42% of the field last year, and so far this season through three games, he's shooting 35%.

He scored just five points in the loss to North Florida and six points versus West Georgia.

Yes, Georgia Tech has a big game against No. 17 Cincinnati coming up, but it has a week-plus to recover for that matchup; thus, I don't think this is much of a lookahead spot.

I'm expecting a big game from George and for Ndongo to welcome Newell to college basketball on the interior. Give me the Jackets at home.

Pick: Georgia Tech +1.5 (Play to -2)
