Ontario Sports Betting

ON Online Sportsbooks & Legalization Information

Ontario was the first Canadian province to legalize online sports betting, which makes sense since it's the country's most populated area. Mobile sports betting launched in Ontario in April 2022 with about two dozen sportsbooks becoming live in the province. Home to both the most populated city in the country in Toronto (also the capital of the province) and the capital of the country in Ottawa, Ontario residents and visitors are finally able to place bets on sports as the seasons continue to shuffle in and out of play.

Here's a full list of operators that joined Canada's largest market:

Sports Interaction Ontario

Sports Interaction, a prominent presence in Canadian sports betting since 1997, extended its reach to Ontario in August 2022. This expansion became feasible through the acquisition of an internet gaming license issued by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, bestowing upon them the legal authority to deliver their services within the province. This significant step followed Sports Interaction's acquisition by Entain, a U.K. company, and their subsequent endorsement by iGaming Ontario. Today, Sports Interaction stands as a fully operational entity in Ontario, offering comprehensive Ontario sports betting services to residents throughout the province.

TonyBet Ontario

Originally known as OmniBet, TonyBet embarked on its online sportsbook journey in 2003. In 2009, the renowned professional poker player, Tony G (Antanas Guoga), took over and rebranded it as TonyBet. On April 4, 2022, TonyBet marked its debut in Ontario, Canada, a significant milestone as it marked their entry into the Ontario market. Their Ontario sports betting and iGaming registration were secured in December 2022, allowing them to commence operations in Ontario, the most populous province in Canada. While the initial start date was somewhat unclear, TonyBet was up and running in Ontario from April 4, 2022.

Bet365 Ontario

Bet365, founded by Denise Coates in 2000, initially operated from a portable building in Stoke-on-Trent. They developed their sports betting platform and ventured into the online sphere in March 2001.

Fast forward to April 4, 2022, Bet365 launched its operations in Ontario. This date is of great significance as it marked the official commencement of legal online sportsbooks in the province. It paved the way for Ontario residents to engage in Ontario sports betting legally, allowing them to place bets online on single-event games for the first time. Following the legalization of sports betting in Ontario, Bet365 Sportsbook received the green light to initiate its operations, providing a wide array of betting options, including horse racing, to customers in Ontario.

NorthStar Bets Ontario

NorthStar Bets set forth on its venture into Ontario in May 2022, initially catering exclusively to the Ontario sports betting market. However, by October 2023, they had significantly broadened their presence to include every province and territory across Canada. For those who favor the convenience of mobile apps, NorthStar Bets introduced a dedicated application for both Apple and Android users in Ontario on August 19, 2022.

Bet99 Ontario

Bet99 commenced its operations in 2020, rapidly expanding to serve parts of Canada within the same year. Their primary focus was on the Canadian market, and they even established an official partnership with the NHL. The company behind Bet99, BQC Consulting, has been in operation since 2019. In the fall of 2022, Bet99 obtained its internet gaming operator registration from the AGCO, a significant milestone. This allowed them to initiate operations in Ontario, officially entering the regulated Ontario sports betting market in October 2022. It's worth noting that the deals and promotions offered by Bet99 in Ontario differ from those available to players in other regions of Canada, highlighting their strong Canadian focus that began with their launch in 2020.

PowerPlay Ontario

PowerPlay, a sports betting platform that originated in 2018 with its launch in October, introduced a fusion of sports betting and casino services. Since its inception, PowerPlay has experienced steady growth within the Canadian market, presenting a diverse array of gambling options.

In April 2022, PowerPlay expanded into the Ontario sports betting scene, coinciding with Ontario becoming the first Canadian province to launch a regulated online sports betting and gambling market on April 4, 2022. While PowerPlay had been operational since 2018, this move in 2022 marked its official entry into the regulated market, allowing the company to offer a premium betting platform to sports fans throughout Canada.

DFS is not available in Ontario

Due to recent debate over Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS), FanDuel and DraftKings are no longer operating in Ontario's DFS market starting since last Apriil

Both sportsbook giants were the only two DFS operators in the province. This decision comes after their inclusion in the gambling bill C-218, citing that DFS is a skill or game of chance, which has divided lawmakers in other U.S. states. Additionally, this bill regulated Ontario residents to only play provincially and contained a hefty licensing fee and revenue share that operators would have to owe the province.

On a brighter note, recent years have seen a turnaround. The Argonauts have been drawing bigger crowds, breaking records in ticket sales, and having a successful season in 2023.
