In Doug Gottlieb’s first game as head coach of Green Bay, the Phoenix will travel to Stillwater to take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Tipoff is at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
The Phoenix surprisingly finished last season at 18-14 (13-7 in the league) after being picked last in the Horizon League’s preseason coaches poll. Despite the record, head coach Sundance Wicks departed for Wyoming.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys also have a new head coach after firing Mike Boynton Jr. following a 12-20 campaign.
Oklahoma State is favored in this matchup by 18.5 points on the spread. The total is set at 150.

Green Bay vs Oklahoma State College Basketball Betting Preview
Green Bay Basketball
One of the more shocking headlines of the college basketball offseason was the Phoenix hiring Gottlieb. Oddly enough, the FOX Sports radio host will continue his weekly show while coaching Green Bay.
But more importantly, he has zero head coaching experience.
We don’t know much about Gottlieb’s coaching abilities, but based on preseason reports, he plans to utilize an aggressive, up-tempo style of play.
We also know that Gottlieb has some talent at his disposal, including former Oklahoma State commit Jeremiah Johnson and ex-Cowboys 7-foot-1 center Isaiah Miranda.
That talent may come together in time for Horizon play, but the departure of leading scorer Noah Reynolds is a huge blow for the Phoenix. Reynolds was the only player on Green Bay to average double figures last season (20 PPG), and his 32.4 usage percentage was 20th in the nation.
Oklahoma State Basketball
Like the Phoenix, the Cowboys also have a new coach as Boynton is out and former Western Kentucky head man Steve Lutz is in. Lutz was an assistant at SMU, Creighton and Purdue before leading both Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Western Kentucky to the NCAA Tournament.
In addition to a new head coach, Oklahoma State is also losing eight players from last season. But what the Cowboys do have is experience.
Fifth-year guard Bryce Thompson is back to lead the charge after averaging 11.6 points per game, which ranked second on the team last year. The former Kansas guard dealt with a shoulder injury for the last six weeks of the season and was on the shelf for most of the summer.
Playing alongside Thompson on the perimeter will be Davonte “Devo” Davis (Arkansas), Brandon Newman (Purdue/Western Kentucky), Khalil Brantley (La Salle) and Arturo Dean (FIU). While shooting is a major question mark, that’s a strong group of guards that have different skill sets and provide Lutz with some major depth.
The Cowboys aren’t as strong up front, but they do have solid rebounders, including fifth-year forward Abou Ousmane (Xavier), Robert Jennings II (Texas Tech) and Patrick Suemnick (West Virginia).
Green Bay vs Oklahoma State Betting Analysis
With two new head coaches, it’s obvious Green Bay and Oklahoma State are both a work in progress.
Since we don’t know what we’re going to get from either team here, I’m going to target the under.
Yes, I mentioned previously that the Phoenix want to play fast and aggressive, but this is Gottlieb’s first ever game as a head coach and Green Bay is bringing back zero double-figure scorers from last season. The Phoenix can run all they want, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to produce a plethora of points.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys have a lot of experience, but it’s unknown how comfortable Thompson will be in his first game coming off a serious injury.
Plus, Lutz will be working to find the best combination in the backcourt, and the Cowboys don’t look like a strong outside shooting team, which means we likely won’t have to worry about the 3-ball.
The only concern I have with this play is Oklahoma State’s rebounding prowess. The Phoenix are likely to get burned on the glass and in turn, that will result in more second-chance opportunities for the Cowboys.
Regardless, I feel most comfortable targeting the under, as I don’t expect to see a ton of points.
