UC Davis vs Washington NCAAB Betting Preview
UC Davis Basketball
UC Davis is only projected to finish fifth in the Big West this season, but it has two things working for it: the return of TY Johnson and its defense.
Let's start with Johnson, who is a senior guard who was voted as a member of the Preseason All-Big West Team. He was the team's second-leading scorer last season (17.8 PPG) and was Second Team All-Big West Conference in 2023-24.
Most importantly, Johnson posted that point-per-game average while shooting just 32% beyond the arc. If Johnson improves his perimeter shooting, he could very well be far-and-away the best player in the conference.
Meanwhile, the Aggies are elite defensively. They were 28th in the country in turnovers forced last season (14.6 per game), which is excellent news considering their roster is longer and more athletic this season.
Washington Basketball
Sprinkle has just three returning players — Franck Kepnang, Wilhelm Breidenbach and Christian King — and none averaged more than nine points per game in 2023-24. In fact, King redshirted last season, so this is an entirely new roster, making this a true restart for the Huskies.
On the positive side, their frontcourt is massive and versatile.
The centerpiece of the roster — Great Osobor — has stuck with Sprinkle since his days at Montana State. The 6-foot-8 forward is undersized and doesn't have much of a jumper, but he's an elite rebounder and finisher.
Osobor isn't alone up front, though, as Kepnang and Oregon State transfer KC Ibekwe provide key rim protection.
None of those players can step out and hit shots consistently, but Breidenbach is a floor spacer who can open things up for guards DJ Davis (Butler) and four-star freshman Zoom Diallo.
The Huskies also have Oakland transfer Chris Conway up front to round out a strong group.
UC Davis vs Washington Betting Analysis
Besides this game being played in Seattle, a lot of areas in this handicap seem to favor UC Davis covering the spread.
Washington is breaking in almost an entirely new roster with a new head coach, which means it's going to take the Huskies some time to find their rhythm.
Meanwhile, the Aggies play elite defense for a Big West team and they have an experienced leader who can take over a game in a heartbeat in Johnson.
Not having 7-footer Francesco Borra, who's out for the season after a torn ACL, hurts against the Huskies' deep frontcourt; however, role allocation could be an issue in game one for Washington.
In the long run, the Huskies' frontcourt could pose problems in the Big Ten, but for now, there are a lot of moving parts that may not fit together seemingly. That will put pressure on Davis and Diallo to create if spacing is limited for Osobor to operate down low.
All in all, I'm putting my faith in UC Davis' defense and Johnson to stay within striking distance.
