Kevin Rogers’ Mariners vs Dodgers Preview
The Mariners are on the third leg of a three-city road swing, but it's been ugly for this Seattle squad.
Coming off an impressive three-game home sweep of the Mets less than 10 days ago, the M's were swept at Detroit and nearly lost all three at Pittsburgh before winning the finale on Sunday at PNC Park.
Seattle traveled west for Monday's opener at Chavez Ravine, but the struggling offense couldn't get the bats going as they were held to less than two runs for the fifth time on this road trip.
The Mariners turn to Bryce Miller tonight, who's been impressive in his last two starts by not allowing a run against the Mets and Tigers. Miller struck out nine batters and yielded two hits in seven innings at Detroit, but the Tigers scratched out two runs in the eighth inning to defeat Seattle, 2-1.
Miller had a horrible May in three road starts against the Astros, Orioles and Yankees (giving up 14 runs), but he's rebounded by allowing a total of three runs in his past three outings away from T-Mobile Park.
In one career start against the Dodgers, Miller fared well by not yielding a run in 5.1 innings, but Los Angeles busted out for five runs in the 11th inning to snap a 1-1 tie to eventually win, 6-2.
In 2023, the Dodgers finished 16 games ahead of the Diamondbacks to win the NL West for the 10th time in 11 seasons. Los Angeles was bounced by Arizona in the NLDS as the Diamondbacks eventually captured the pennant.
In 2024, the Dodgers need every win down the stretch as they have a three-game edge over the Padres and a four-game advantage over Arizona heading into Tuesday.
L.A.'s pitching staff has picked things up the last two games by allowing one run in wins over St. Louis and Seattle, which came on the heels of giving up five runs or more in each of the previous four contests.
Walker Buehler finished 16-4 in 2021 with an ERA of 2.47, but the Dodgers' right-hander has been atrocious this season, yielding three runs or more in nine of 10 starts.
In three of the past four trips to the mound, Buehler hasn't lasted past the fourth inning, and he couldn't hold an early 3-0 lead at Milwaukee in his last start.
Since July, the Dodgers have won in four of their last five opportunities after capturing the home series opener, which includes three victories by two runs or more.
Mariners vs Dodgers Prediction, Betting Analysis
Seattle owns a 4-1 record in the first five innings in Miller's last five road starts, while the Mariners haven't allowed a run in the first five innings in seven of the past 10 games.
There's no reason to back Buehler, and in spite of Seattle's struggles at the plate, we'll back the better pitcher in Miller as an underdog.
Pick: Mariners F5 (+120) | Play to +110
Moneyline
The Mariners have lost five of their last six games in the road underdog role, including last night's shutout loss. The Dodgers have won 11 of their past 15 home games since the All-Star break, but Buehler is winless in his last two starts at Dodger Stadium.
Run Line (Spread)
Six of the last nine wins for the Dodgers have come by two runs or more, while seven of the past nine losses for the Mariners are by multiple runs. Miller owns a 5-2 mark on the run line in his last seven starts, while all four L.A. wins with Buehler starting have come by more than two runs.
Over/Under
The Dodgers were riding an 11-4-1 over run from July 30 through August 16, but Los Angeles has hit the under in each of the last three contests. Seattle has been up and down from a totals perspective in the last 10 games with a 5-5 mark, while Miller has cashed the under in his last two outings.
