Anthony Volpe Player Props: Fade SS After Big Game 4?
By Tony Sartori
The Los Angeles Dodgers look to win the World Series with right-hander Jack Flaherty. Through 28 regular season starts, the right-hander posted a 13-7 record with a 3.17 ERA and 1.07 WHIP.
His underlying metrics were equally strong, as Flaherty ranked in the top half of the league in xERA, xBA, average exit velocity, walk rate and hard-hit rate. With that said, his greatest attribute was the ability to retire hitters via punchout.
Flaherty ranked in the 72nd percentile in chase rate, 91st percentile in whiff rate and 90th in strikeout rate.
That brings me to Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe, who I want to sell high on after his grand slam in Game 4.
He posted a .243 BA this season, and his analytics were even worse. Volpe ranked in the bottom-third of the league in xBA, xwOBA, xSLG, average exit velocity, barrel rate and hard-hit rate.
The shortstop also ranked in the bottom half of the league in chase and strikeout rate, which makes him a bad matchup against Flaherty. Subsequently, Volpe is 0-for-4 against the right-hander with three strikeouts.
Speaking of right-handers, Volpe's BA dropped even further when facing them this season.
Pick: Anthony Volpe Under 0.5 Hits (+120)
Anthony Rizzo Player Props: Plus-Money Play on Slugger
By John Feltman
I already have this prop bet locked into for my SGP for tonight, but I think this is such an excellent price that I'm playing it separately. I know that Rizzo's power has been non-existent since he fractured two fingers, but I will not ignore his past success against Flaherty.
I took this prop back in Game 1, and Rizzo fell short. However, I have not changed my stance with him, and I still love his matchup against Flaherty.
Rizzo only has one extra-base hit in the postseason thus far, but he is 8-for-26 overall. While he may have less power than usual, he is 10-for-23 lifetime against Flaherty with 3 HRs. The line is mispriced, in my opinion, due to his recent performances over the last few games, but it is worth noting that he is batting in the middle of the Yankees lineup.
He hit .228 in limited plate appearances during the regular season, but his average ticked up a bit against right-handers. Rizzo is not hitting the ball nearly as hard as he had in the past, but his chase and whiff rates are in excellent form (above the 75th Percentile).
Barring injury, he'll have at least four plate appearances — possibly two against Flaherty — to get this done.
