Pac-12 play rolls on as two teams seeking turnarounds in different forms will meet in Corvallis on Thursday. The Arizona Wildcats and the Oregon State Beavers will face off, and both are in desperate need of a win.
Arizona has had its fair share of ups and downs, picking up some impressive wins against the best teams in the country in the non-conference before a handful of quiet nights have plagued it in Pac-12 play.
Following their latest loss to Washington State, the Wildcats don't look like they're at their best, failing to cover against an injury-ridden USC team and a miserable UCLA offense. The Wildcats will do everything they can to get back on track here.
There haven't been many positives for Oregon State this season, which has now lost five consecutive games. However, the silver lining is that four of them have come on the road.
The losses have turned to blowouts of late though, losing to Utah and Colorado by a combined 60 points in their last two contests. They'll be happy to find themselves back at home in this spot, but unhappy to see that it's Arizona standing across the court awaiting them.
The analytics still love Arizona, even if its game-to-game results have become more inconsistent.
This is still the seventh-ranked offense in college basketball and the fifth-ranked defense. The Wildcats have a loaded roster that can beat you up on both ends.
They shoot well from everywhere, and when they don't make their shots, they usually grab the rebound, ranking in the top 10 in both offensive and defensive rebounding percentage.
Arizona loves to play fast and assert its will on the game. Three of its four losses this season have come against teams that play the 190th-fastest tempo or slower.
Oregon State loves to play slow, so pace will be one key element to watch in this one.
While Arizona is elite on both sides of the floor, Oregon State is not, to say the least. The Beavers' offense ranks 206th in the country, and their defense ranks just slightly ahead (161st).
Wayne Tinkle has a star to work with in Jordan Pope.
Pope runs the show in the backcourt, but after four straight 20+ point scoring games, he's totaled just 10 points and seven points in their last two losses.
Oregon State is horrible on the boards, which may be the biggest mismatch in this game. It allows teams to rebound 31% of their misses, which ranks just 239th in the country.
Arizona will be able to dominate the Beavers on the glass. Unless the Beavers are making shots from outside (which is rare), it's hard to see them hanging on for long.
Arizona vs. Oregon State
Betting Pick & Prediction
Oregon State will limit possessions in this game, but it likely won't be enough.
Arizona is due for a great performance, and there's not a statistical category that Oregon State can exploit on paper.
Take the Wildcats to cover.
