Let's take a look at the BYU Cougars vs. West Virginia Mountaineers odds and make a prediction in our Big 12 college basketball betting preview for Saturday, Feb. 3.
Big 12 play continues Saturday as BYU hits the road to take on West Virginia. Both teams are coming off a win and will be looking to build upon the positive momentum established earlier this week.
All of West Virginia's success this season has come at home, where the Mountaineers are 8-5. They haven't won a game outside of Morgantown, so they'll be happy to be hosting BYU. West Virginia beat Cincinnati at home earlier this week and has won three straight Big 12 home games.
BYU remains a metrics darling as it ranks ninth on KenPom, despite losing four of its past seven games. Also, BYU is 1-3 in true road games this season.
BYU's offense is tough to guard. The Cougars rank eighth in offensive efficiency and aren't afraid to shoot from anywhere. BYU makes 36% of its shots from outside, but shoots the second-most 3s of any team in college basketball. In fact, 51% of the Cougars shots come from beyond the arc.
If there is a weakness for BYU's offense, it's that it rarely get to the free-throw line. The Cougars rank 361st in college basketball in free-throw rate.
Defensively, they are also very good and rank 23rd in defensive efficiency. They rarely block shots, but they limit 3-point attempts and do a great job on the boards. The Cougars don't beat themselves, and make opponents earn everything they get.

West Virginia's season has mostly been a disaster. With 13 losses already, the Mountaineers are in danger of losing 20+ games in their first year without Bob Huggins. Despite the struggles, you have to give them credit for showing up in their biggest games as of late, earning home wins over Texas and Kansas in the past month.
West Virginia is better on defense than on offense as the Mountaineers rank 108th defensively and 169th offensively. They often win the foul battle, as they are 45th in the country in avoiding fouls and 60th at drawing them.
Given the way BYU plays, it's reasonable to expect West Virginia to have more chances at free points in this one. At home, as a big underdog, that could be the difference in covering the spread.
