Summit League play kicks off on Monday night as the entire league is set to play a conference game. The most exciting match up will see the South Dakota State Jackrabbits take on the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles will be looking to extend their six-game winning streak, which included an impressive 84-70 win over the Liberty Flames. South Dakota State, meanwhile has won their past two, but is just 5-7 on the season.
Will the Oral Roberts offense, which has been a top-50 scoring team in the nation, be too much for the Jackrabbits?
The Jackrabbits are a better team than their record indicates as they've faced strong competition in Arkansas and Alabama. South Dakota State also pulled off a win early in the year against Boise State, who has now won nine in a row.
South Dakota State has struggled offensively and is averaging just 67.2 points per game, but the bigger concern against Oral Roberts will be their defense. The Jackrabbits have allowed teams to rack up 74.5 points per game. Specifically, the Jackrabbits have been bad in the paint, where they allow teams to shoot 51.4%. The Jackrabbits haven't been much better defending anywhere else on the floor as opponents are shooting 45.8% overall.
One thing South Dakota State has done well is limit fouls. The Jackrabbits rank 41st among all Division I teams, averaging just 14.7 fouls per game.
Most people are familiar with Max Abmas. He's Oral Roberts' leading scorer and also leads the Summit league with an average of 22.8 points per game. But it's more than just Abmas. As a whole, the Golden Eagles offense has been outstanding and ranks 20th nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency.
Oral Roberts has also been great at limiting mistakes and ranks inside the top 25 nationally, averaging just 10.6 turnovers per game. They've also been top 100 when it comes to fouls per game, averaging just 15.3 fouls per game.
One concern with the Golden Eagles has been their defense. Oral Roberts is 300th nationally, allowing teams to average 76.4 points per game. The biggest issue against South Dakota State will be on the perimeter, where Oral Roberts has allowed opposing teams to shoot 38.6% from beyond the arc. The Jackrabbits are hitting 33.8% from deep, and if they can get hot from three-point range, it could be a major issue for Oral Roberts.
South Dakota State vs. Oral Roberts Betting Pick
The Jackrabbits lead the all-time series 19-11, including a win in last year's matchup, which turned into a 106-102 shootout. This year, I expect the Golden Eagles to simply be too much for South Dakota State.
Oral Roberts offense has been one of the best in the country while South Dakota state has struggled at both ends of the floor. The Golden Eagles defense has had problems limiting teams scoring, but I don't think the Jackrabbits offense can do enough for that to be a factor.
I was able to grab Oral Roberts -9.5 over the Jackrabbits, but I would back the Golden Eagles as high as a 12-point favorite over South Dakota State on Monday night.
Pick: Oral Roberts -12 or Better |
