Charleston will have the opportunity to win its own MTE on Sunday as it squares off against Virginia Tech.
If you've kept up with anything I've written so far this year, you know how high I was on the Cougars coming into the season.
So far, they've outperformed my expectations, and taking down the Hokies would be their biggest achievement yet.
Virginia Tech has yet to lose a game this season and handled its toughest opponent so far earlier in this tournament, holding off Penn State, 61-59.
Will Charleston be able to give Virginia Tech its first loss of the season? Or will the Hokies' ability to slow down the game prove to be too much for the Cougars?
The Nittany Lions were able to make a late push to get within two of the Hokies with under a minute left, but the Hokies forced a turnover with one second left to secure the win.
Virginia Tech slowed that game to a grinding halt, and will need to do so again to beat Charleston.
The 61 points the Hokies scored were the fewest they've had in a win since 2019. Keeping the pace similar against the Cougars should be the top priority.
The Hokies' shooting has been outstanding this season as the team boasts a true shooting percentage of 61.9% through five games. I expect those numbers to stay consistent against a Charleston team that's biggest weakness has been its defense.
Charleston is especially bad when it comes to defending 3-point shots, as opponents have shot better than 33.3% from deep.
Meanwhile, Virginia Tech is cashing in on 40% of its attempts from beyond the arc.
Charleston has the offense to keep up with Virginia Tech, even against a defense that holds opponents to just a 47.3% effective field goal percentage.
The Cougars' offense is posting an effective FG% of 51.6%, and even when the Charleston does miss, it's coming down with an offensive rebound on 37.2% of misses.
There's no point in pretending this Charleston defense stands a chance at stopping the Hokies.
Pushing the pace is the Cougars' best chance at keeping this one close.
Virginia Tech vs. Charleston Betting Pick
While I don't think the Charleston defense stands much of a chance at stopping the Hokies, I do think this Charleston team will fight even harder than it already has because of the opportunity to win its home MTE.
The Cougars have proven they can keep up with some of the best (the final score against North Carolina doesn't accurately depict just how close and competitive that game was).
I'm targeting Charleston at +5 or better. I think Charleston has the talent and determination to keep this game close.
Pick: Charleston +5 or Better |
