It has been a season of ebbs and flows for the Creighton Bluejays. But after two losses to Xavier and UConn, they have rebounded with back-to-back victories.
Tonight, they'll face a St. John's team that has an upset on its mind. However, pulling it off will be easier said than done.
The Red Storm will bring an exciting brand of basketball, but their tempo has also proven to be a double-edged sword. St. John's recently picked up a big victory over UConn, although there are many double-digit losses to go along with it.
Will the Bluejays be able to weather the Red Storm? Let's find out as we dive deep in search of the best bet.
St. John's is all about pushing the pace. It's third in the nation in adjusted tempo, and the pace has proven to be a tough task for those that try and keep up.
While the uptempo attack fits its guard-centric roster well, the biggest beneficiary has been the big man Joel Soriano. Soriano is in the midst of a monster season, averaging 16.4 points and 12.3 rebounds per game.
However, Soriano will have his hands full with Ryan Kalkbrenner, so this game may fall into the hands of David Jones and Andre Curbelo. Jones and Curbelo both transferred over and have shown flashes of greatness, but both have been relatively quiet in conference play.
If the Johnnies are going to hang around in this game, it'll critical to get the ball inside and challenge Kalkbrenner. If they can get the big man into foul trouble, driving lanes will open up, and Soriano can make a much bigger impact.
This Creighton team received a ton of preseason hype with a formidable starting five that's laced with talent, size and experience. However, it has yet to put it all together.
The Jays are a team that can do a bit of everything with the ball. The backcourt of Ryan Nembhard and Trey Alexander can penetrate and facilitate. However, the frontcourt of Kalkbrenner, Baylor Scheierman and Arthur Kaluma is versatile. The trio has the ability to take care of the glass but also stretch the floor.
Their size and versatility will be a problem for the Red Storm. Expect the Bluejays to slow this game down and create many high-percentage looks in the paint with their big men.
St. John's vs Creighton Betting Pick
While we have seen the Bluejays aren't afraid to get into a track meet, it would be in their best interest to slow the game down. And if they do slow the pace, their offensive success will keep St. John's from running its run-and-gun offense.
Creighton will pull away in this game, and that will primarily be due to its work on the defensive end. The Jays rank 22nd in defensive efficiency and are one of the best teams in the country at defending without fouling, so the clock will continue to wind when the Red Storm struggle.
Take the under on a total that's inflated from the Johnnies' tempo.
