The ACC nightcap is bound to be a good one as the Virginia Tech Hokies take on the Duke Blue Devils. The Hokies have traded wins and losses during their most recent stretch of games, but it's certainly an improvement over their 1-7 start to conference play.
As for the Blue Devils, they appear to have hit their stride as they have won three straight. However, this matchup is their chance to pull even after they dropped the first meeting with Virginia Tech.
Can Duke continue its late-season surge and roll through the Hokies? Let's dive deep to find out.
The offense hasn't been the issue for Virginia Tech this season, as it ranks 30th in adjusted efficiency. The Hokies are a dynamic squad with guys who can punish defenses from all areas of the court.
However, in this matchup, it may be best for them to try and stretch Duke's defense. The Blue Devils are the tallest team in the country and both clog the paint and limit attempts around the rim.
Though they are willing to allow shots from beyond the arc. Fortunately for Virginia Tech, the Hokies have more than one guy who can drain 3's.
Look for the likes of Hunter Cattoor, Sean Pedulla and Grant Basile to take a majority of the shots in this one. However, just because they'll have looks doesn't mean a majority of them will fall. Duke is 28th in 3-point percentage allowed.
This Duke team is unique it has both size and ultra-athletic size. It's leader, Kyle Filipowski, is the perfect example.
The seven-foot freshman has proven to be dominant at times. He can score on the low block, make 3's and clean up misses on the offensive glass. However, he's not the only one. Fellow freshmen Mark Mitchell and Dereck Lively II have shown flashes as well.
We should expect to see the Blue Devils work the ball inside as the Hokies don't have the size to contend down low. However, if Virginia Tech over-commits, guys like Jeremy Roach and Dariq Whitehead will make capitalize from long range.
Virginia Tech vs. Duke Betting Pick
This game opened right on the mark as multiple projections have the spread right around seven and the total around 142. However, if there is value here, it's on the under.
Neither of these teams are in a hurry to get the ball up the court and Duke's size causes many long possessions for its opposition. Of course, it also helps that these teams are evenly matched in terms of shooting.
Take the under in this tough ACC matchup.
Pick: Under 142.5 |
