The Mountain West conference continues to be the darling of the college basketball season. As we get closer to March, six MWC teams are practical locks for at-large bids.

On Wednesday evening, the Colorado State Rams travel to Albuquerque to take on the New Mexico Lobos at The Pit. Both teams are 8-5 in conference play, trailing Utah State by one game.

Colorado State Rams

The Rams have been balanced throughout the season and rank in the top 35 in both offensive and defensive efficiency. They have a strong offense and shoot 56% from the floor, but the Lobos excel at defending the perimeter.

The Rams will have to rely on free throws and inside shots to score. Senior point guard Isaiah Stevens faces a talented Lobos backcourt, and the Rams' perimeter defense may struggle.

Despite this, the Rams are a good defensive team, and their success on offense should carry them through this game.

New Mexico Lobos

This game is crucial for both sides, but it's a must-win for the Lobos. They're playing at home and have a score to settle after losing to the Rams earlier this season.

The Lobos are well-rounded and rank in the top 30 for both offensive and defensive efficiency. However, their defense is the stronger of the two units, especially when it comes to perimeter defense and forcing turnovers.

On the offensive end, the Lobos are also impressive and have a good track record of protecting the ball. They're also a solid 3-point shooting team thanks to their elite trio of scorers. Jaelen House and Donovan Dent are dynamic in the backcourt as both shoot over 36% from 3.

Jamal Mashburn has struggled recently, but has the potential to carry the offensive load. This game will likely be decided on the perimeter and I have more faith in the Lobos 3-point shooting and defensive abilities.

Plus, playing at home should give the Lobos an extra edge. The Pit will undoubtedly be packed and loud on Wednesday night as fans know how important this game is for the Mountain West Conference standings.

Betting Pick & Prediction

There is no place you'd rather be if you're a resident of New Mexico on Wednesday. Both teams are evenly matched, but I'm going to have to side with the Lobos for this matchup.

I believe the Lobos' defense is stronger than that of the Rams, and they're also looking to redeem themselves after losing to San Diego State last Friday. The Rams may also be feeling a bit sluggish after their win against Utah State on Saturday.

The key to winning this game is the perimeter, and the team that can capitalize on its open 3-point shots will have a better chance of winning. The Lobos like to turn up the tempo, which gives them an advantage, whereas the Rams prefer to go slow and methodical.

With the Lobos playing at home, I have confidence in their ability to win this game, especially since the Rams are due for a letdown.
