The two best teams in the American Athletic Conference meet in Sunday's championship game when Houston battles Memphis at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, TX.
Both programs should be in the NCAA Tournament regardless of the result, but the automatic bid would ease any stress for the Tigers on Selection Sunday.
When I look at the total and the spread for the matchup, I don’t see a lot of betting value in either spot. However, I do like a player prop in the title game.
So, my best bet is for Memphis’ Kendric Davis to go over his points total of 22 points or better.
The 2022 AAC Player of the Year has been one of the most dynamic scorers in the country, entering AAC tournament play ranked inside the top 15 with 21.5 points per game. He also leads the league in assists per game at 5.8.
The Tigers offense runs through Davis, and he hasn’t disappointed since transferring from SMU. He has also averaged 26.5 points per game in AAC Tournament wins against Tulane and UCF.
If you look back to the regular-season meetings between the two squads, Davis was unavailable for the first contest before dropping a game-high 26 points in the regular season finale. He also topped this number in 12 of 19 conference games.
After the heartbreaking loss in the last matchup, Davis was very vocal about how badly he wanted to face this Houston squad again. The Cougars are elite defensively, but I believe this could force the ball into Davis’ hands even more in the title game.
He is the one Tigers player who has the ability to beat his man in any situation, and I believe coach Penny Hardaway will continue to feed him the ball.
