The ACC ramps up on Friday with a slate that includes a matchup between the red-hot Miami Hurricanes and a Notre Dame team looking to make a statement.
Miami has won eight in a row, including impressive wins against UCF, Rutgers, NC State and most recently, Virginia. This winning streak has catapulted the Hurricanes to No. 14 nationally and squarely in the national title dark horse conversation.
Notre Dame has had less success recently, losing four of its last six games. The Irish's most recent contest was a 59-43 victory over No. 162 Jacksonville, which gave ND a run for its money.
Friday's matchup presents a huge opportunity for Notre Dame to get its second marquee win of the season against the surging Canes.
Jim Larranaga has built yet another Miami team that's knocking on the door of being a true contender.
The Hurricanes have reached a 12-1 record behind their ultra-impressive offensive play. Miami has the 13th-highest Adjusted Offensive Efficiency (114.1) in the country due to a well-balanced attack.
The Hurricanes are one of the best teams in the country at not settling for outside shots, scoring just 28.4% of their points from beyond the arc. Due to this, Miami has had success on the interior, posting the 28th-highest 2P% in the country at 56.2%.
This offensive style will thrive against a Norte Dame team that has struggled preventing penetration. The Irish allow their opponents to score 59% of their points from 2-point range, which is the 20th-highest rate in the country.
In addition to creating quality shots, Miami has been extremely clinical on offense. The Hurricanes have turned the ball over on just 16.8% of their offensive possessions.
Against Notre Dame, turnovers will not be an issue, as the Irish have struggled to create defensive pressure this season. Through 13 games, the Irish have only created a turnover on 13.5% of their opponents' offensive possessions (360th nationally).
Look for the Hurricanes' offense to keep on rolling.
Mike Brey and the Fighting Irish have had an up and down 2022 season, with their only quality win coming in a 70-52 home victory against Michigan State at the end of November.
In addition to this lack of marquee wins, Notre Dame has dropped two games to Florida State and St. Bonaventure, who are both outside the top-150 nationally.
Unfortunately, three of Norte Dame's five losses have come in its last four games. This poor play will need to be quickly corrected against a Miami team that has found its stride.
Just as the Notre Dame defense will struggle containing Miami's offense, the Irish also will need to find their own ways to score.
The Irish have let nothing come easy for them offensively this season, scoring just 14.9% of their points through free-throw attempts (304th). These trips to the charity stripe will not come easy against a Miami team that has only allowed its opponents to score 16.5% of their points from the free-throw line.
In addition to its inability to get to the foul line, Notre Dame has struggled to create extra possessions on the glass. The Irish rank 353rd nationally in offensive rebounding percentage, creating second chances on just 19.9% of possessions.
Against Miami's offensive attack, both of these percentages will have to increase in order to keep pace.
Miami vs. Notre Dame Betting Pick
Miami is playing some of the best basketball in the country right now, and will travel to South Bend to take on a Notre Dame team that hasn't beaten a quality opponent in a month.
That being said, I will gladly back Miami until the market properly adjusts to the level it's playing at.
I see value in the Hurricanes at four points or better, even on the road.
Pick: Miami -4 or Better |
