Two of the most entertaining teams in the country will face off in Evanston, Illinois, on Wednesday when the Northwestern Wildcats play host to the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Both teams have their sights set on making the NCAA Tournament, and potentially even making a run when they get there. They are both offensively gifted teams, and this should be a fun game to watch and bet on.
Nebraska has risen up to 46th nationally on KenPom. It is 16-7 and has really earned its keep in the Big Ten thus far. The Cornhuskers have been at their best against their toughest opponents, and they have a 3-2 record in Big Ten play against KenPom top-20 opponents. They have really struggled on the road though, losing their last five away games vs. conference teams.
That's a bad matchup against a Northwestern team that has been stellar at home. The Wildcats are flawless in their own gym during the Big Ten season, and have picked up key wins over Purdue, Michigan State and Illinois along the way. Northwestern lost back-to-back games last week, but both came on the road and in overtime, one to Purdue and one to Minnesota. This could be a get-right game for the Wildcats to let some frustrations out.
Nebraska has one of the better offenses in all of college basketball. The Cornhuskers rank 37th nationally in offensive efficiency and they can beat you from inside or outside.
Keisei Tominaga is the biggest name, and he can bomb 3s unlike any other player in the sport. Tominaga will pull up from anywhere, and when he gets going, he can pour in 3s in bunches.
The Cornhuskers' best player has actually been transfer center Rienk Mast, who is a double-double machine. Mast made four 3-pointers in Nebraska's overtime loss to Illinois last game. He will be a tough matchup for the Northwestern bigs to solve.
For Northwestern, it all starts and ends with Boo Buie. The guard is a sensational offensive weapon, and one of the most clutch players in college basketball. He is a closer in the truest sense of the word — and if the game is tied late, watch out.
What makes Northwestern special is the pieces around him, though. As a team, Northwestern makes 39% of its shots from outside, good for eighth in all of college basketball this season.
Ty Berry and Brooks Barnhizer have been a huge part of the Wildcats' success. Berry is one of the best snipers in college hoops, and he can match Tominaga's gravity as a floor spacer. Barnhizer is a mismatch for wings because he is too big for guards and too quick for forwards. Between those two and Buie, Northwestern is an incredibly difficult team to guard.
Nebraska vs. Northwestern
Betting Pick & Prediction
It's rare that you find two teams that have both played back-to-back overtime games. Tired legs may be a concern for both sides here.
Given Nebraska's recent road struggles and Northwestern's home dominance, it's hard to bet against the home team, and the best player on the floor in Buie.
Take Northwestern to cover.
