Here's Notre Dame vs. Oklahoma State odds and a pick, including an NCAAB betting guide for Friday, Nov. 17.
We head out to Brooklyn, New York, for another edition of the Legends Classic. We have the Oklahoma State Cowboys taking on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Both of these teams are coming off of a loss, but the Pokes may have suffered the biggest loss with star guard Bryce Thompson leaving the game with an injury. Thompson is most likely out for today's matchup.
As for the Irish, we all know this was going to be a transition year under first-year head coach Micah Shrewsberry. The Irish were projected to finish second-to-last in the ACC.
With Thompson out for the Pokes, this matchup becomes a hell of a lot more intriguing. Let's break down both of these teams and uncover some betting value.
The Pokes lost a tough game to St. Bonaventure Thursday evening, and they were rolling when Thompson was in the game. The Bonnies mounted a nice comeback when he left with an injury, and it appears he will not be available for this game either.
Luckily for the Pokes, they're a pretty deep team overall. Through three games, they're 60th in the nation in bench minutes, which to me is significant considering their matchups haven't been blowouts.
I expect the Pokes to have a lot of success beyond the arc against this Notre Dame defense. With limited data, the Pokes are shooting 37% from 3, as the Irish are 321st in opponent 3pt%.
My biggest question in this matchup is how well this offense will operate without Thompson. He's by far their most important player, and he's essentially the membrane of the entire team.
I'm also not thrilled about the Pokes' performance at the charity stripe. They're shooting 54% as a team, so this is something that could be a lingering issue for the rest of the season.
Defensively, they have a bit of an easier matchup as opposed to last night. As I mentioned, this is a brand-new Irish team, and teams with new coaches and new players tend to take a while for everything to start clicking.
I definitely give the talent edge to the Pokes in this matchup, but the real question is if they'll be able to cover this number or not.
Notre Dame is also due for a bit of positive shooting regression, as it's really struggled from outside of the arc.
It's still early in the year, but the preseason expectations of this Irish team may have been a bit generous. And when I say generous, this is a team that should live in the basement of the ACC through the majority of the season.
The Irish got manhandled by Auburn, 83-59, yesterday, and this was also coming off of a loss to Western Carolina. I mentioned this is going to be a transition season for the Irish, so it's hard to predict when they're going to start clicking as a group.
For starters, I know the Irish have been awful, but the fact that they're shooting 18.8% from 3 has to eventually turn around. This could be a spot their backcourt capitalizes on the absence of Thompson and gets more open looks from beyond the arc.
The Irish will be at a size disadvantage in this spot, so they'll definitely have to get creative in their offensive sets. I would expect a lot of ball screens in order to get some open looks and mismatches.
I've been impressed with their good free throw shooting, which is something they'll need to continue if they want to win this game outright. The Irish also do a good job of protecting the basketball, so I could see a path their offense starts to turn a corner in this spot.
Not only is this a brand new team for Shrewsberry, but this is one of the most inexperienced teams in the nation. Perhaps they can take away some positives from the loss yesterday and gel as a group.
Notre Dame vs. Oklahoma State
Betting Pick & Prediction
It's gross folks, but this is the beauty of college sports. I will be backing the Irish in this spot, as I think the loss of Thompson will be too much to overcome.
I wouldn't dare look at the Irish in this game if he was healthy, but I also think they're due for some positive 3PT shooting regression. This to me just seems a classic bounce-back spot, especially since the Pokes played in a much closer contest yesterday.
Let's hold our noses and hope Shrewsberry has his team ready to play.
Pick: Notre Dame +7.5 (Play to +7)
