  • Creighton is still attempting to prove that it belongs in the Big East title race as it takes on Seton Hall on Tuesday.
  • Both teams will be able to flex their defensive muscles, though.
  • Does that mean the total is in play? Cooper Van Tatenhove breaks it all down.

The electrifying Big East continues on Tuesday with a matchup between Seton Hall and Creighton. Both teams could benefit greatly from a win.

Seton Hall was able to beat St. John's on Saturday for its first Big East victory of the season. The win snapped a three-game conference losing streak against three of the top teams in the league (Providence, Xavier and Marquette).

The Pirates will look to build on the momentum they gained on Saturday to steal a game on the road.

For Creighton, this game presents an opportunity for it to prove it should still be in the conversation for the Big East title.

The Bluejays came out victorious in their first two conference games thanks to the return of Ryan Kalkbrenner.

With a three-game stretch against Connecticut, Xavier and Providence on the horizon, Creighton will need to stay focused in order to not stumble before its schedule ramps up.

Seton Hall Pirates

In his first season, Shaheen Holloway has built a Seton Hall team that prides itself on its stifling defensive play.

The Pirates rank 31st nationally in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency (92.2) by not allowing teams to score from the perimeter at a consistent rate.

The Pirates allow the 18th lowest 3-point percentage in the country at just 27.7%. This results in their opponents scoring just 25.2% of their points from distance (327th nationally).

This perimeter defense will be crucial against a Creighton team that scores 36% of its points from beyond the arc (62nd nationally), In its last two wins against Butler and DePaul, Creighton shot better than 50% from 3-point range.

Look for Seton Hall to limit that strength from Creighton.

On the offensive end, the Pirates will have less success against a Creighton defense that thrives on fundamentals.

The Bluejays are the best team in the country at defending without fouling, allowing just 15.7% free-throw attempts in relation to total field goal attempts.

As a result, Creighton allows its opponents to score just 10% of their points at the free-throw line, the 10th-lowest rate in the country.

This will be problematic for a Seton Hall offense that has relied on the charity stripe to score 23.9% of its points this season, the eighth-highest rate in the country.

Without this offensive crutch, it will be difficult for the Pirates to keep up with a Creighton offense that's finally at full strength.

Creighton Bluejays

Since the return of Kalkbrenner, the Creighton offense has finally found the form that was expected of it in the preseason.

Kalkbrenner's importance was shown on Christmas Day, as he scored a team-high 19-points to go with four rebounds, three assists and a block. As is shown in EvanMiya's BPR Rankings, Kalkbrenner's presence is extremely valuable to the Bluejays.

Even given this offensive elevation due to the return of Kalkbrenner, Creighton will still have to work for its points, particularly from the perimeter.

So far this season, Seton Hall has been one of the best teams in the country at defending the perimeter, allowing its opponents to score just 25.2% of their points from 3-point range (327th nationally).

Much of Creighton's recent success has come from its ability to stretch the floor through its perimeter shooting. The Bluejays account for 36% of their total points from 3-point range (top-70 nationally).

Even if Seton Hall struggles on the offensive end, you can be assured that Holloway will have his team locked in defensively for all 40 minutes.

Seton Hall vs. Creighton Betting Pick

In a game that's important for both teams, defense will be an emphasis for both head coaches. Creighton will be able to limit Seton Hall's trips to the foul line, while Seton Hall will not allow Creighton to have success from the perimeter.

Additionally, both of these teams rank outside the the top 100 in average possession length, with Seton Hall ranking 210th in Adjusted Tempo.

Given these defensive advantages and the overall tempo, I see value in the under that currently sits at 137.5.
