Non-conference play is winding down throughout the country, and a pair of California teams hook up Thursday night.
The Stanford Cardinal travel south to face the San Diego State Aztecs as they look to keep their brief winning streak alive before starting Pac-12 play.
Last season’s national runner-up will look to avoid a lookahead spot here, as San Diego State faces Gonzaga next Friday before starting Mountain West action on January 3 against Fresno State.
Below, we have Stanford vs San Diego State odds and a pick for Thursday.
We all know the bulk of the Pac-12 is going elsewhere next season, but it’s odd to think that Stanford will be playing alongside the likes of Duke, North Carolina and Miami.
The Cardinal’s final foray into the Pac-12 begins with the Arizona schools coming to Palo Alto next weekend, but Stanford certainly would like a win over San Diego State to avoid falling back to the .500 mark.
There haven’t been many signature wins on Stanford’s schedule this season. The Cardinal have beaten Cal State Northridge (which just upset UCLA), Sacramento State, Eastern Washington, San Diego and Idaho. The only team on that list ranked higher than 200th in the country, according to KenPom, is Eastern Washington, which has started 4-6.
As far as the losses go, Jerod Haase’s squad dropped all three games at the Battle 4 Atlantis against Arkansas, Michigan and Northern Iowa, and also lost at home to Santa Clara by 12.
Stanford has yet to play a true road game this season — the Cardinal went 2-8 last season as an away team.
The Cardinal picked up a nice boost in Sunday’s 82-64 blowout of Idaho, as freshman guard Kanaan Carlyle made his season debut and scored 11 points off the bench.
Four other Stanford players are averaging double-digits in scoring, led by forward Maxime Raynaud (14.8 PPG) and senior Brandon Angel, who's posting a career-high 13.3 points per game.
The Cardinal are shooting nearly identical numbers from 3-point range when compared to last season (36%), but the 2-point shooting has improved from 51.1% to 56.7%.
The Aztecs made a historic run to the Final Four last season and were one victory away from a national title.
It'll be tough to advance that far once again, but San Diego State has jumped out to a 9-2 record and is the second-ranked team in the Mountain West behind Colorado State, according to KenPom.
San Diego State has posted three wins against top-70 teams, beating Saint Mary’s, Washington and UC Irvine. The two losses for the Aztecs came to BYU (which is fifth) and upstart Grand Canyon.
Brian Dutcher’s team is one of the top defensive units in the country annually, as the Aztecs rank 26th in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency and have allowed fewer than 70 points in five games against Division I opponents this season.
The Aztecs haven't been successful covering numbers this season, compiling a 2-7 record against the spread. Six of those ATS losses are in the favorite role, including four non-covers when laying six points or more.
San Diego State defeated Stanford last season at Maples Pavilion, 74-62, as 4.5-point road favorites. The Cardinal never led as the Aztecs built an 11-point halftime lead and didn’t look back.
Forward Jaedon LeDee has taken a major step for the Aztecs this season after averaging nearly eight points per game last season. LeDee is putting up 22.2 points per game this season and pulling down almost 10 rebounds a contest. He leads the Mountain West Conference in both categories.

Betting Pick & Prediction
It's hard to ignore San Diego State's struggles to cover the number this season, especially as a favorite.
Stanford has yet to pass a big test this season, but the addition of Carlyle should boost the confidence of this Cardinal team.
