Two teams from the same state are set to square off on Saturday in the Big 12 as the Texas Longhorns head to Fort Worth to play the TCU Horned Frogs.
TCU is hot, while Texas has lost a few rough games to elite opponents.
Both teams will want a win here as conference play heats up.
Unfortunately for head coach Rodney Terry, the "horns down" movement has been more visible lately. Texas has now lost five of its last eight games. Part of its struggles has been the rise in competition level, as Texas lost to two KenPom top 10 opponents in BYU and Houston last week.
Texas is on the outside looking in regarding the NCAA Tournament, and a road win against a top-25 opponent would be a critical boost to its resume.
It won't be easy, though, as TCU has won three consecutive games over the last two weeks, including two road wins over Oklahoma State and Baylor. TCU tends to play up and down to competition, as all eight of its onference games have been decided by single digits.
Texas has talent, but so does TCU. The Horned Frogs are 10-1 at home, and the lone loss was a one-point loss at the hands of Iowa State.
Texas has been excellent on offense this season, ranking 26th in adjusted offensive efficiency in the country. They shoot the ball exceptionally well from outside, making 37% of their shots from 3-point range.
Max Abmas is among the best on-ball scorers in the sport, and he has scored in double figures in all 21 games this year for Texas. He's remarkably consistent and can keep Texas in games single-handedly on the road — he helped the Horns to road wins over Oklahoma and Cincinnati.
Defensively, Texas does a great job limiting attempts from 3-point range, as opponents shoot just 33% of their shots from deep. With Kadin Shedrick and Dylan Disu down low, Texas has a handful of shot blockers that make it challenging for offenses to get easy buckets at the rim.
It will be strength on strength when TCU tries to score inside, as the Horned Frogs make 54% of their shots from inside the arc, ranking 43rd nationally.
TCU is solid on offense and defense, ranking top 50 nationally on both ends.
TCU loves to play fast, and it culminates in the 63rd fasted tempo in the sport.
TCU is excellent at forcing turnovers, ranking 32nd in the nation in turnover rate. Many of those become live ball steals, and TCU is 13th nationally in steal rate.
The Frogs tend to hang around in games. But they also let their opponent hang around.
