The Central Division's Winnipeg Jets host the Metropolitan Division's Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday evening. These clubs typically compete in lower-scoring games, with six or fewer total goals scored in seven of the past 10 matchups.
Here's a look at the odds, as well as our pick and predictions for the Philadelphia Flyers vs. Winnipeg Jets.
Can Flyers Give Support to Hart?
It has been a troubling season for the Philadelphia Flyers in their first campaign under head coach John Tortorella. However, Carter Hart’s play in net has been the one silver lining for Philadelphia this year.
Through 36 appearances in the crease this season, Hart boasts a .908 save percentage (SV%) and 2.97 goals against average (GAA). Based on his metrics, regression should not be an issue.
The Canadian netminder ranks in the top half of starting goaltenders in goals saved above expected per 60 minutes (GSAx/60) at 5-on-5.
However, as is typically the case when Hart starts, support may be difficult to come by. At 5-on-5, the Flyers rank just 26th in the league in expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60).
This offense, which lacks a lot of skill and creativity, may struggle in this matchup as the Winnipeg Jets are projected to start one of the best goaltenders in the world.
Hellebuyck Hitting Stride With Winnipeg Jets
Slated to start between the pipes for Winnipeg is goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who is putting together a campaign worthy of Vezina Trophy conversation.
Through 38 starts this season, Hellebuyck is 23-14-1 with a .924 SV% and 2.40 GAA.
Based on his metrics, regression should not be an issue for the Jets' netminder; he ranks fifth among starting goaltenders in GSAx/60 at 5-on-5. This excellent play is likely to continue against Philadelphia, a team that Hellebuyck has dominated over the last couple of seasons.
Over his last six starts against the Flyers, Hellebuyck boasts a .930 SV% and 2.33 GAA. In front of Winnipeg's netminder is a strong defense that ranks in the top half of the league in expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60) at 5-on-5.
However, like Hart, Hellebuyck may not get the strongest goal support as the Jets ranks in the bottom half of the league in xGF/60 at 5-on-5. Winnipeg boasts a lot of strong scoring options in the top-six forward group with the likes of Kyle Connor, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Mark Scheifele, Blake Wheeler and Nikolaj Ehlers.
However, scoring depth is still a concern with this club and its bottom-six.
Flyers vs. Jets Pick
Philadelphia's greatest strength is its goaltending, and Hart continues to keep this team in games when he starts in net. While the Flyers' defense is poor, their offense is even worse.
On the other hand, the Jets have been involved in many slow-starting contests and the first period under has cashed in six of their last nine games. One of the contests in which the first period under did not cash during that stretch was against Philadelphia, which is why we are getting +120 on this line.
With that said, in a Hart vs. Hellebuyck goaltending matchup and with two offenses that are not extremely efficient at even strength, it is worth taking a shot at the first period to stay under the total this time around.
