Carolina Hurricanes

Goaltending has been the main issue for Carolina all season, and that problem is now exacerbated with the concussion to Pytor Kochetkov. As a result, the Canes had to pick up goaltender Spencer Martin off waivers, which is certainly not going to make this situation any better.

He is projected to make his Hurricanes debut on Wednesday night and should be a good fade candidate. Through 13 appearances in the crease this season, Martin is 3-8-1 with a fade-worthy .887 SV% and 3.31 GAA.

Martin was in particularly poor form prior to hitting the market (hence why it happened), posting a .845 SV% and 4.63 GAA over his past four starts. His team lost three of those four outings with all three losses coming by at least a two-goal margin.

Meanwhile, goal support could be difficult to come by for Martin as the Canes are expected to miss forward Andrei Svechnikov with an upper body injury.

Boston Bruins

That aforementioned goal support was already going to be a tall task considering that Carolina is going against one of the toughest teams to score on in the league. This season, Boston ranks in the top five in both goals allowed per game and penalty-kill percentage.

A big part of these rankings has been the play of goaltending tandem Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark, the best pairing in hockey. It is Swayman who is expected to get the nod on Wednesday, and he is looking to build upon his Vezina-worthy campaign.

Through 26 appearances between the pipes, he is 15-3-7 with a .923 SV% and 2.31 GAA. Entering this matchup in particularly good form, Swayman is 3-0 with a .964 SV% and 1.00 GAA over his past three starts.

The Bruins won each of those three games by a three-goal differential.

Meanwhile, this group should give Swayman plenty of help considering it ranks in the top six in both goals scored per game, power-play percentage and shooting percentage.

Betting Pick & Prediction

I alluded to Martin's recent struggles in the Carolina section, but what I left out is that two of those three outings came against Boston. Martin is 0-2 over those two outings with a .873 SV% and 3.58 GAA.

The Bruins won each of those two games by at least a two-goal differential. Yes, Carolina is better than Columbus (his previous destination), but it is still an enormously difficult spot to make his team debut on the road against one of the best teams in the league.

Furthermore, Boston ranks higher than the Canes in goals scored per game, power-play percentage, shooting percentage, goals allowed per game and penalty-kill percentage. Add in the clear advantage of the Swayman vs. Martin matchup, and the Bruins should be able to win by at least two goals.
