Two Western Conference powerhouses will battle it out when the Seattle Kraken touch down in Manitoba to take on the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday.
Knocking at the door of the top spots in their respective divisions, the Kraken are wrapping up a five-game post-All-Star road trip. They've managed just one win so far, against the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday. Meanwhile, the well-rested Jets have played just once since their break, easily besting the Chicago Blackhawks by a 4-1 score on home ice on Saturday.
Here's the latest on both teams, and your best bet for the game.
Seattle Kraken
The three-games-in-four-nights spin through the New York City-area teams is daunting at the best of times. And the Kraken didn't do themselves any favors when they weren't ready to play their opener against the New York Islanders last Tuesday. After being shut out for just the second time this season, they followed up with multi-goal losses to the Rangers and the Devils before earning two points against the Flyers.
Special teams have been an issue: the power play has scored just once in the last six games, and the Kraken have given up five goals during nine shorthanded occasions in the last three games alone.
A bright spot has been the play of goaltender Philipp Grubauer, who has held Seattle's opponents to three goals or fewer in his last 10 starts dating back to Dec. 15. On this trip, Dave Hakstol has been alternating his goalies. That suggests that Martin Jones is up in Winnipeg. He's on a three-game losing skid, and gave up 13 goals in those three games.
On the injury front, the Kraken are without forward Andre Burakovsky, who was injured last week. And something to keep an eye on: although there's no official update as of Monday night, Matty Beniers hobbled off the ice after the final buzzer in Philadelphia on Sunday after taking a puck to the knee on a late-game shot block.
Winnipeg Jets
The Jets were in one of their worst funks of the season before the All-Star break, with just three wins in eight games. They looked sharp against Chicago on Saturday, but how much of that was due the competition from the 31st-ranked team in the league?
We'll find out Tuesday, when the Kraken should present a much tougher challenge.
For the season, the Jets are just OK in their 5-on-5 puck possession numbers, and they don't score a ton. But their special teams are strong and they get top-shelf goaltending from Connor Hellebuyck. That has been enough to land them in the win column more often than not.
The defense will get a little stronger on Tuesday, when Dylan DeMelo returns after missing three games with a lower-body injury. Winger Mason Appleton also played his first game in three months on Saturday, now recovered from a wrist injury. That leaves forward David Gustafsson (upper body) as the lone name on the Jets' injured list.
Kraken vs. Jets Pick
The Kraken would like nothing better than to finish up their road trip by collecting two important points in Winnipeg. But the Jets tend to feast on western teams which are on their way home after tough trips out east. They have an impressive 19-8-0 record this season at Canada Life Centre.
And while the Kraken could be running on fumes on Tuesday, the Jets will be well rested — and as close to healthy as they've been in months.
In the standings, the Jets hold a two-point edge over the Kraken, with the same number of games played. And the season series has been split so far, with each side earning a 3-2 win in Seattle earlier in the year.
All things being equal, there isn't much to choose between these two sides. But the schedule-maker has handed the Jets a distinct strategic advantage for this game — and the oddsmakers have reflected that.
Consider backing the Jets for a regulation win. FanDuel is offering that bet at +110 as of Monday night — good value for the home side.
