The Metropolitan Division's New York Rangers host the Pacific Division's Seattle Kraken in this cross-country tilt.
Low-scoring games are typically in store when these clubs meet as there have been five or fewer goals scored in all three of their lifetime meetings.
Here's a look at the odds, as well as our betting pick and prediction for Kraken vs Rangers.
Seattle Kraken
The Seattle Kraken's identity is that of a sandpaper lineup willing to make every night a grind for the opposition. This element of their game is especially prominent in their defensive metrics as the Kraken rank ninth in the league in expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60) at 5-on-5.
Backing up this strong blue line is goaltender Martin Jones, who is expected to start between the pipes given that Seattle is on the second half of a back-to-back and Philipp Grubauer got the nod against the New Jersey Devils. Jones is 9-3 with a .907 save percentage (SV%) and a 2.50 goals against average (GAA) over his past 12 starts.
This strong stretch of goaltending is likely to continue against New York, a team Jones has fared well against over the past couple of seasons. Over his past five starts against the Rangers, Jones is 3-1-1 with a .920 SV% and a 2.70 GAA.
However, Seattle's offense is primed for regression. At 5-on-5, the Kraken rank first in the league in goals for per 60 minutes (GF/60), but are just 19th in xGF/60. This regression is likely to hit in this matchup as they are slated to go against the reigning Vezina Trophy winner, Igor Shesterkin.
New York Rangers
It has been yet another dominant campaign for Shesterkin, who is 22-8-7 with a .917 SV% and a 2.47 GAA through 37 starts. Based on his metrics, regression should not be an issue for one of (if not) the world's best netminders.
Among starting goaltenders, Shesterkin ranks fourth in goals saved above expected per 60 minutes (GSAx/60) at 5-on-5. This elite goaltending is likely to continue against Seattle, a club Shesterkin has dominated since its founding.
Across three career starts against the Kraken, he is 2-0-1 with a .943 SV% and a 1.97 GAA. The under hit in all three of those contests.
In front of Shesterkin is a team that skews toward unders. At 5-on-5, the Rangers rank in the top-half of the league in xGA/60, but in the bottom-half in xGF/60.
Kraken vs. Rangers Pick
This week, New York addressed its scoring issues with the acquisition of winger Vladimir Tarasenko from the St. Louis Blues. Tarasenko's sniping ability should greatly help the Rangers as the season progresses, especially if they put him on a line with playmaking superstar Artemi Panarin.
However, it may take time for Tarasenko to adjust to New York's style, so his impact may not be immediate. Jones and Shesterkin both typically perform well in this matchup, and both teams rank in the top-half of the league in xGA/60 and in the bottom-half of the league in xGF/60 at 5-on-5.
Even if Tarasenko's transition is seamless, the under is still the play to make.
