Here's everything you need to know about the Nashville Predators vs. Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday, March 13 – our expert NHL prediction and pick.
You’d be hard pressed to find a team hotter than Nashville right now. Despite losing in overtime (miraculously, mind you) against the Wild, the Predators are 8-0-2 in their last 10 games. They’ve also firmly placed themselves in the playoff hunt after a mediocre start to the season.
Winnipeg was reamed by its coach Rick Bowness after falling 5-0 to Vancouver. In turn, the Jets followed up with a shutout win against the Capitals at home. Additions in Tyler Toffoli and Colin Miller were also a big help, as they’re loaded up for a potential run.

Filip Forsberg and Roman Josi are the clear stars for the Predators, and both are on a tear. However, Tommy Novak is someone whom people need to get more accustomed to. The second-year forward has 16 points in his last 17 games and is fresh off a three-year extension with the club. Nashville has also received exceptional production from Ryan O’Reilly and Gustav Nyquist.
In their recent 10-game stretch, the Predators are third in Expected Goals with a 57.61 xGF%. Defensively, they’ve been just as strong, playing to a fourth-best 2.51 xGA/60.
To go along with that, Nashville’s power play has been humming by scoring at a 29% clip. The penalty kill is also doing an exceptional job at a strong 87%.
Amidst this stretch, Juuse Saros has played like one of the best goaltenders in the league. In his last nine starts, he’s registered a stout .933 SV%, and his Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx) numbers continue to rise after an unlikely rough start to the season.
With the addition of Toffoli, Winnipeg has one of the strongest top sixes in the league. Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor are having wonderful seasons, and they also have an incredible chemistry with Nikolaj Ehlers. Not to mention, the addition of Sean Monahan earlier in the season has paid remarkable dividends for the Jets’ power play.
There was a reason why Bowness ripped into his team. Their 5-on-5 play hasn’t been very good as of late, with a 47.16 xGF% and a 3.36 xGA/60.
The Jets’ special teams have struggled all season. With Monahan in the bumper position, the power play is now scoring at a 21% clip. The penalty kill, however, still needs work at 75% over the past 10 games.
There are hardly any words to describe Connor Hellebuyck, who’s on his way to being a Vezina Trophy nominee. While the two starts before the win against the Capitals weren’t optimal, he’s still posting incredible numbers. He has a .922 SV% and a league leading 29.5 GSAx.

Betting Pick & Prediction
While the Predators are rolling, they’re due for at least a minor crash sooner or later. I fear that the crash may be coming soon. As mentioned, they’re 8-0-2 in their last 10 games, but those two overtime losses came in the last four. I really like what they’ve done, and they’ve found themselves in the playoff hunt, but the momentum may be fizzling.
I was pretty bearish on the Jets before the trade deadline. I love their talent yet wasn’t a fan of their play, but the win against Washington may have been a game-changer.
The additions of Toffoli and Miller, paired with Bowness’s postgame comments after the game against the Canucks, are just what the doctor ordered. The Jets learned their lesson after last year's post-All Star Break disaster, and they don’t want history to repeat itself.
The Jets are heavy favorites, but I’ll be backing them in regulation.
