Here's everything you need to know about the San Jose Sharks vs. Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday, February 14 – our expert NHL prediction and pick.

San Jose is the only team yet to play after the All Star break, and this will be its first game back. The Sharks actually left the first half of the season with a solid record after winning four out of their last six games.

Winnipeg pulled itself out of a pickle on Saturday by beating Pittsburgh. Prior to that win, the Jets lost five in a row, and Jets fans were starting to have nightmares of last season again. Tonight will be a huge test to see if they can keep up their winning ways.

San Jose Sharks

William Eklund is a player to keep an eye on for the remainder of the season as the former top-10 pick ended the first half with a crescendo as he scored six points in his last five games.

For the Sharks to keep winning, they’ll need more out of Fabian Zetterlund, a top goal scorer who's quieted down lately.

Despite San Jose ending the first half strong, its season has essentially been thrown to the wolves. The Sharks are 31st in Expected Goals with a 41.7 xGF% and last defensively with a 3.2 xGA/60.

To that point, the Sharks' special teams are also a disaster. They score on the power play at a 16% clip, while their penalty kill is 31st at 73%.

Given how Mackenzie Blackwood has taken the bulk of the starts, I would expect him to be first one out of the locker room. Blackwood did well in his last four starts, playing to a .952 SV%. Throughout the season, he’s also played to a decent 1.4 Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx), which is impressive given how poorly the Sharks have been all season.

Winnipeg Jets

After adding Sean Monahan, he instantly became the Jets’ third-leading scorer. While he has yet to register a point, he’s created chances, even hitting one off the post last game.

During the five-game losing streak, there wasn’t a whole lot of scoring from anyone.

Luckily, Mark Scheifele got back on the wagon and has a solid chemistry with Nikolaj Ehlers and Kyle Connor.

Regardless of this poor stretch, Winnipeg has still played pretty decent 5-on-5 hockey. Over the past month, it’s played to a 10th-best 52.48 xGF% and a 16th-best 2.5 xGA/60.

However, poor special teams have created a massive void for this offense. The Jets continue to be poor on the power play, contributing to their 15% clip, and on the penalty kill, they’re at 77.5%.

Chances are we'll see Connor Hellebuyck in net tonight. Hellebuyck has been everything the Jets have needed and more, with a strong .925 SV% and a league-leading 25.0 GSAx.

Betting Pick & Prediction

For games like this, thinking outside of the box produces the best value. The Jets are clearly the better team and are the overwhelming favorite as they are even projected to win by two or more goals (and betting -2.5 is always risky).

Typically when betting both of these teams, I tend to veer away from the total. However, it gives us the only valuable option here, and I prefer the under. The Sharks' resume speaks for itself as they are poor on both ends of the ice, have been unable to generate a sustained attack and have been subpar on special teams. However, goaltending has kept the Sharks afloat.

The Jets are a bit of a different story since they have done a fine job at creating 5-on-5 offense but are mostly snake-bitten. Goaltending, too, is a huge factor. Hellebuyck is well on his way to becoming a Vezina nominee once again, and with the lack of offense for the Sharks, Hellebuyck should have a fairly easy night.

The Under 5.5 is widely available at multiple sportsbooks, including DraftKings and ESPN BET, at +100 odds.
