McNeese Cowboys Betting Preview: Lost Offense

McNeese picked up its first win of the season last week after defeating Southern University at home by a score of 21-7.

After two weeks of action, McNeese State has not fixed the offensive woes that plagued them last season.

While the Cowboys caught fire in the second half against Tarleton State two weeks ago, the first half was a disaster outside of one long Clifton McDowell touchdown pass.

Against Southern, the Cowboys pieced together one touchdown drive through three quarters. However, in the fourth quarter, the Cowboys scored 21 unanswered points, but two of those scoring drives were six and two yards, respectively. Those drives were set up by a blocked field goal and a Southern special teams miscue punt snap over the punter's head, which McNeese recovered at the two-yard line.

McNeese finished with just 272 total yards and 13 first downs.

While the defense has played well across the past six quarters, the offense appears lost. I can't imagine the Cowboys will wake up against an overwhelmingly talented Texas A&M defense.

Also of note: I thought the Cowboys were set with McDowell at QB1, but they switched to Kamden Sixkiller midway through the game against Southern. Keep an eye on that key position battle.

Texas A&M Aggies Betting Preview: Red-Zone and Third-Down Efficiency

Texas A&M started the Mike Elko era in a disappointing but familiar fashion with another early season loss — this time against Notre Dame.

The first half was a tight-knit defensive struggle, with teams trading field goals to tie the game 6-6 at halftime. But with the game tied at 13 late, ND went on an eight-play, 85-yard drive and scored a decisive touchdown with two minutes left.

The A&M defense played well, but the offense — specifically quarterback Connor Weigman — struggled throughout. He completed just 12 of 30 passing attempts for 100 yards with two interceptions. A&M had no explosive plays in the game, and they struggled on third down (4-for-13).

Elko’s 4-2-5 defensive scheme has produced solid results throughout his career, including his stint as defensive coordinator at A&M from 2018 to 2021.

Texas A&M's future rides on its offensive improvements. Coordinator Collin Klein emphasizes red-zone and third-down efficiency, but the Aggies did neither last week.

McNeese vs Texas A&M Pick & Prediction

I don't see how McNeese can sustain drives and keep its defense rested.

Through two games — against vastly inferior competition — 14 of the Cowboys' 25 offensive possessions have been three-and-outs. They're bad on early downs and can't convert on late downs (11-for-27 on third down entering this matchup). They likely won't create explosive plays or successfully rush the rock against A&M.

Thus, the Aggies should create short fields and wear down the McNeese defense in the trenches.

Elko's Duke teams played two FCS teams. He kept his first-stringers in until about halfway through the third quarter, and his offenses scored efficiently in both meetings.

The gap between the higher-level FBS and mid-to-lower-level FCS is widening each year — in Week 1, FBS teams went 58-0 straight up against FCS competition.

A&M has plenty of work to do offensively, and Elko tends to play starters plenty in these tune-up spots.

Check the line on Saturday morning. I will be looking to play Texas A&M at -44.5 or less, but I would play it up to -48.5.

Pick: Texas A&M -44.5 or Better
