Red Sox Betting Preview: Starting Lineup; Dobbins the Villain

Red Sox Starting Lineup

  1. LF Jarren Duran (L)
  2. DH Rafael Devers (L)
  3. RF Rob Refsnyder (R)
  4. C Carlos Narváez (R)
  5. 1B Romy Gonzalez (R)
  6. 3B Abraham Toro (S)
  7. SS Trevor Story (R)
  8. CF Ceddanne Rafaela (R)
  9. 2B Kristian Campbell (R)

Starting pitcher: Hunter Dobbins

Dobbins was outspoken ahead of this start, as the young righty reportedly stated that he would rather retire than sign with the Yankees. Dobbins has certainly put a little extra pressure on himself with the comment, as the Bronx crowd will certainly be all over him if things aren't going his way in this matchup.

Dobbins has shown relatively well across his first eight starts of the season and could potentially be a better-than-average starter the rest of the way. He holds an xERA of 3.96 and an xFIP of 3.75 and has offered improved velocity compared to last season. He holds a Stuff+ rating of 97, and a Pitching+ rating of 104.

However, Dobbins has really struggled when attempting to work through the order for a third time this season, as he's allowed a slug rate of .560 and a 9.53 ERA when facing the lineup for a third time. The Red Sox bullpen has been a strength this season with a 3.46 ERA, and Alex Cora may be eager to get his starter out relatively quickly in this matchup.

The Red Sox offense has been in solid form recently, as it ranks 11th in wRC+ over the last month of play, and put up 16 runs over the first two games of this series. They are currently without two noteworthy pieces in Alex Bregman and Triston Casas, as well as Masataka Yoshida, who has not yet played this regular season.

The Red Sox rank fourth in wRC+ versus left-handed pitching this season and rank first in hard-hit rate versus lefties. The Red Sox will have three batters in the lineup that have had at least 10 AB's versus Rodon, and they have combined for a 1.117 OPS.

Yankees Betting Preview: Starting Lineup; Rodon; Judge

Yankees Starting Lineup

  1. DH Ben Rice (L)
  2. RF Aaron Judge (R)
  3. LF Cody Bellinger (L)
  4. 1B Paul Goldschmidt (R)
  5. 3B Jazz Chisholm Jr. (L)
  6. SS Anthony Volpe (R)
  7. CF Trent Grisham (L)
  8. 2B DJ LeMahieu (R)
  9. C J.C. Escarra (L)

Starting Pitcher: Carlos Rodon

Rodon has been one of the hottest pitchers in baseball entering this matchup — over his last four starts, he's pitched to an ERA of 0.72 and allowed an xFIP of 2.70.

He's allowed an xBA of .216 in those outings, and struck out 33% of batters faced. His pitch metrics have also improved recently, as he holds a Stuff+ rating of 104 and a Pitching+ rating of 107.

The Yankees' offense has remained in dominant form over the last month of play, as it holds the best wRC+ in baseball and a top-ranked OPS of .807. They hold a top-ranked wRC+ of 131 versus righties over the last 30 days, and have made soft contact only 13.1% of the time in that span.

Aaron Judge has remained the best batter in baseball over the last month; he has slugged .740 with an OPS of 1.223 throughout his last 118 PA's. He's hard-hit 57.5% of balls in that span, and an average exit velocity of 95.7. Even in his lesser split versus right-handed pitching, he's still batted .385 with a 1.166 OPS.

Red Sox vs Yankees Prediction, Betting Analysis

This was always going to be the biggest start of Dobbins' young career, pitching on Sunday Night Baseball versus the Red Sox greatest rival, and he certainly made things a little more fun with his pregame comments.

He has the potential to be a quality starting arm this season and has shown cause for optimism, but this will be a tough spot as he takes on the hottest lineup in baseball.

Judge was dominated by Garrett Crochet in yesterday's loss and went 0-for-4 at the plate, but he should be well situated to bounce back from an off-day in a matchup versus Dobbins.

Judge has hit .591 with a 2.080 OPS versus rookie starters this season, and could be poised for a bounce-back on Sunday Night Baseball.

The Red Sox have not yet walked Judge in this series, and Dobbins has walked just 5.3% of batters this season. Cody Bellinger has provided Judge with strong insulation, slugging .548 over the last month, which will hopefully prevent the Red Sox from pitching Judge too carefully.

At +100, there looks to be value in keeping it chalky and backing baseball's best batter to record over 1.5 total bases in this high-profile matchup.

Pick: Aaron Judge Over 1.5 Total Bases +100 (Bet365, Play to -110)

Moneyline

With the Red Sox currently priced at +180, there does not look to be much value with either side.

Rodon has been one of the best starters in baseball, but the Red Sox have hit him well historically and project to be one of the better teams in the league versus lefties.

Run Line (Spread)

I have no bet on the run line.

Over/Under

A total of 8 looks fair given the starting pitching matchup.
