Guardians vs Reds MLB Betting Preview
Editor's Note: This written pick is a transcription from today's episode of the Payoff Pitch Podcast.
This should be a bullpen game. Brady Singer is on the trade block, and he was originally slated to start today for the Reds. They're not really saying what they're doing with him. So I don't know if they have potentially a deal in place for Singer that they're waiting on and don't want him to get hurt.
He was initially supposed to start before the doubleheader was announced. Now he's not. That leads me to believe that there's a trade in place for him, and we may see him dealt in the next couple of days.
Regarding tonight, we're expecting a bullpen game for the Reds, including some combination of Tejay Antone and Chase Petty for about four innings of the nine. We'll see what bullpen the Reds have left after Game 1, which Chase Burns starts against the Guardians.
I have done some research into doubleheaders, specifically by running back through our Action Labs database and seeing how they perform relative to the market and expectations.
Game 1 typically goes over by about 3/10 of a run per game. Game 2 plays a little bit more normally. And I think it's because Game 1, once one team gets out to a multi-run lead, the losing team just starts throwing out the bad bullpen in an effort to save their leverage relievers for Game 2.
So I would be really careful betting Game 1 unders in doubleheaders, as you may not get the pitchers that you're anticipating into that mix. Meanwhile, for Game 2, you kind of know who's available and who's not.

Guardians vs Reds Pick, Betting Analysis
I make this total closer to 8.3 total runs, and I like the under 9 down to -120.
However, if the Reds bullpen gets wiped out in Game 1, we have the option to just buy out of this bet with no harm, no foul.
But going into Game 1, I think there is value on the Game 2 under, and I'd be willing to lock it in up to -120 on the Under 9.
Pick: Under 9 (-110, FanDuel)
