Tony Sartori’s Tigers vs White Sox Preview
Detroit is going with a bullpen game on Wednesday afternoon, which is likely bad news given how poorly its relief corps has performed this season.
Entering this matchup, the Tigers’ bullpen ranks in the bottom half of the league in ERA, FIP, expected FIP (xFIP) and WAR. However, the good news for Detroit is that run support should not be an issue.
This season, the Tigers rank in the top 10 in runs per game, batting average, slugging percentage and OPS.
That success at the plate is likely to continue against rookie right-hander Shane Smith, who takes the mound for Chicago.
Smith made the All-Star game as a rookie due to his strong start to the campaign. However, reality set in quickly for the undrafted 25-year-old.
Over his past seven starts, Smith is 0-4 with a fade-worthy 8.78 ERA and 1.59 WHIP. His underlying metrics suggest these woes will continue the rest of the way.
Smith currently ranks in the bottom third of the league in xERA, average exit velocity, walk rate and hard-hit rate. Following the right-hander is a bullpen due for regression.
Chicago's relief corps has treaded water, but they rank 20th in FIP and 28th in xFIP. The Tigers' strong offense can take advantage of this expected regression.
Tigers vs White Sox Prediction, Betting Analysis
The main concern in taking the over in this contest is Chicago's underwhelming lineup. However, everyone has hit Detroit's bullpen well this year, which paves the way for the White Sox to score at least a couple of runs.
That should be all that is necessary for this over to cash, given that Detroit should tee off on Smith.
He has arguably been one of the worst starters in baseball over the past two months, and the Tigers' strong lineup is unlikely to let him off the hook.
Pick: Over 8.5 (-125, Fanatics | Play to -130)
Moneyline
I lean toward Chicago, but I don't trust Smith.
Run Line (Spread)
I also like Chicago to cover, but I'm staying away for the same reason listed above.
Over/Under
As mentioned, I'm betting Over 8.5.
