Doug Ziefel’s Tigers vs Phillies Preview

Detroit Tigers Betting Preview

Great starting pitching is a theme in this series as Jack Flaherty and Ranger Suarez dueled on Friday.

However, you may not find a better pitching matchup than the one we have on Saturday, and it starts with Tigers' ace, Tarik Skubal.

Skubal is the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner and is on pace to take home the award again as he's been even better this season. The lethal lefty enters with a 2.09 ERA and 0.84 WHIP.

It's easy to point out the suggested regression from Skubal, but it's simply because his numbers are otherworldly. Even in a tough matchup against a Phillies lineup that has hit lefties well this season, fade him at your own risk.

The market has come in and backed Skubal in this matchup as the Tigers have moved to being small favorites since the line opened.

Philadelphia Phillies Betting Preview

Set to counter Skubal is Phillies' ace Zack Wheeler.

Wheeler has arguably been the top and most consistent starter in the National League since coming to Philly.

However, in his age-35 season, his numbers are better than ever as he comes into this start with a 2.56 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. Despite being in the midst of a career season, the Phillies have not pushed him too far, as he's only gone past the sixth inning in eight of his 21 starts this season.

On Saturday, he faces a Tigers lineup that has been solid overall this season, but has been ice-cold in the last month. We saw Detroit show signs of life in Friday's ballgame, and the Phillies will be able to turn to the bullpen at any sign of trouble, as Orion Kerkering and Jhoan Duran combined for just 16 pitches last night.

Tigers vs Phillies Prediction, Betting Analysis

While this matchup is a dream for pitching enthusiasts, the Phillies have shown that they are not going to push Wheeler deep into every start.

Additionally, Wheeler is not hyper-efficient either, as he's averaged 100.8 pitches per outing.

So, with the market in support of the Tigers and Skubal in for a tough road assignment, it's best to fade Wheeler directly, as we should see him exit by the seventh, whether he's sharp or not in this one.

Pick: Zack Wheeler Under 18.5 Outs Recorded
