Two of the premiere franchises in Major League Baseball begin a crucial three-game set in the Bronx as the red-hot New York Yankees host the Los Angeles Dodgers Yankee Stadium.

The Dodgers continue their East Coast swing after avoiding a sweep in Pittsburgh on Thursday, while the Yankees are coming off their ninth series win in their last 10 tries. New York, however, is dealing with concerning news on the injury front as Juan Soto was pulled from Thursday's finale with left forearm discomfort. Soto, who is day to day with inflammation, is not in the lineup for the Yankees on Friday night.

Los Angeles Dodgers

In 10 of the last 11 seasons, the Dodgers have hoisted the National League West crown and when they finished second in 2021, L.A. still won 106 games.

This season is business as usual for Dave Roberts' team, who owns the second-best record in the National League at 39-25 behind the Phillies, who have won 44 games so far.

Los Angeles bounced back after getting swept at Cincinnati in late May to win five of six games. However, the Dodgers stubbed their toe in Pittsburgh with back-to-back losses to the Pirates before breaking through on Thursday with a blowout win at PNC Park.

The Dodgers are coming off nine consecutive series against teams at or below .500 as they last faced a team with a winning record in early May when they hosted the Braves.

Granted, Los Angeles swept that three-game home series from Atlanta, but the Dodgers have played one road series against a team currently above .500 this season, which came at Minnesota in early April.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto makes his Yankee Stadium debut on Friday, seeking his sixth win in the last eight starts. The right-hander inked the largest contract for a pitcher ever with a 12-year, $325 million megadeal to help anchor this Los Angeles rotation.

Yamamoto struggled in his Dodgers' debut against the Padres in South Korea by lasting one inning and allowing five runs in a 15-11 loss. The Dodgers started 1-4 in Yamamoto's first five starts but have rebounded with a 6-1 record in the past seven outings.

The Japanese hurler has yielded four runs in each of his previous two road starts against the Reds and Giants, but his first three away outings (not including the start in South Korea) saw zeroes across the board as Yamamoto didn't give up a run against the Cubs, Nationals, and Diamondbacks.

From a strikeout prop perspective, Yamamoto has hit the Over on his K prop in four of five road starts, while striking out at least seven batters three times in these away appearances.

New York Yankees

The Yankees own the best run differential in baseball and the top record at 45-19 after sweeping the Twins at home.

Probably more impressive than their overall record, New York is riding a mind-blowing 20-1-2 record in the first five innings of the last 23 games.

The Bronx Bombers start strong and end strong, while posting a 25-6 mark since May 3 with their last series loss coming at Baltimore in early May.

The Yankees have done all this damage without reigning Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole in the rotation this season, as New York turns to Cody Poteet in Friday's opener.

Poteet has taken Clarke Schmidt's spot in the rotation for the time being after Schmidt sustained a lat strain and is sidelined for at least a month.

Poteet picked up a win in his last outing, a 7-3 victory at San Francisco last Saturday as he struck out six batters in five innings of work. It marked only Poteet's second start of the season and 11th start of his career, as he played his first two seasons in Miami before getting released by the Marlins in 2022.

The most concerning news heading into this series and the near future is outfielder Juan Soto dealing with left forearm discomfort. Soto leads the American League in batting average at .318 and is third in RBI with 53 (Aaron Judge is second with 54).

Betting Pick & Prediction

Soto's status is huge heading into tonight's game as the Yankees are rare home underdogs this evening.

Yamamoto has turned things around since a slow start and the Dodgers should be able to take the momentum of Thursday's offensive outburst into tonight's opener and grab a win.

Pick: Dodgers ML -120 (Play to -130)
