Walker Buehler posted a 5.38 ERA and 4.68 xERA in the regular season. His Average Exit Velocity and Hard-Hit Rate are slightly above average, but he had issues with walks and only struck out 18.6% of batters.
Buehler has made two starts during the 2024 postseason. He was roughed up by the Padres in the NLDS, surrendering six runs on seven hits over five innings. He rebounded in the NLCS, firing four innings of shutout ball with six strikeouts against the Mets.
Buehler can keep the ball on the ground, but he may have issues with Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Juan Soto, — three sluggers who excel at elevating the ball.
On offense, the Dodgers have an 11.4% walk rate and 19.5% strikeout rate in the playoffs, with a 121 wRC+. Against righties this postseason, Los Angeles has multiple bats above a .330 xwOBA.
However, Clarke Schmidt has the ability to miss bats — notable considering Shohei Ohtani, Teoscar Hernández, Enrique Hernández, Andy Pages and Chris Taylor all have a 24%+ strikeout rate. Schmidt may not pitch deep into the game, but he can offset L.A.'s impactful bats.
In relief, the Dodgers have a 4.77 xFIP. They have a 22.5% strikeout rate and 8.9% walk rate, so they are not missing too many bats.
The Dodgers’ 3.08 bullpen ERA doesn't tell the true story about how lucky the relief staff has been for not striking out many hitters. They are also without one of their best relievers in Evan Phillips for the series.

Clarke Schmidt had a 2.85 ERA and 3.75 xERA in the regular season. His Average Exit Velocity was a touch above 89 mph with a Hard-Hit Rate in the 55th percentile.
That said, his Barrel Rate is well above average and his strikeout rate of 26.5% is great even though he walks 8.5% of batters. Since he can get hitters to whiff, he has the ability to get through the big bats in L.A.'s lineup.
Schmidt's two starts this postseason have been identical. Against the Royals in the ALDS and the Guardians in the NLCS, he's logged 4 2/3 innings of two-run ball.
The Yankees have a 106 wRC+, 12.8% walk rate and 22.5% strikeout rate. Since neither the L.A. bullpen nor Buehler can't strike out many hitters, the Yankees could have productive plate appearances, whether it be putting a ball into play or getting on base via the walk.
Against righties in the playoffs, Juan Soto carries a .629 xwOBA while Giancarlo Stanton and Gleyber Torres are at a .400+ xwOBA and a few others are above .340. This is more than enough to knock Buehler out of the game and pick apart the L.A. bullpen. The Dodgers have squeezed by the Yankees in two close games thus far, but they may not be able to in Game 3.
In relief, the Yankees bullpen has a 2.87 ERA and 4.40 xFIP. Their walk rate is 11.8% with a 21% strikeout rate.
Similar to the Dodgers, the Yankees’ relief staff has not produced many strikeouts and has been getting a little lucky.
