Doug Ziefel’s Dodgers vs Giants Preview
It's safe to say the Dodgers are as cold as we've seen them this season.
After dropping Friday's series opener, they enter this matchup on a seven-game losing streak.
However, they are primed to snap that streak tonight against their arch rivals, the Giants.
Cold streak included, the Dodgers are still second among MLB lineups in xWOBACON and third in xBA.
They are due for positive regression at the plate, and we should see it on Saturday when their lineup squares off against Landen Roupp.
Roupp has flashed electric stuff this season, but his command has failed him, leading to mistakes both in and outside of the strike zone.
His 1.46 WHIP is a testament to the amount of traffic on the basepaths he's had to work with, and the Dodgers are the worst possible matchup for him as they lead the majors in hitting with runners in scoring position.
Additionally, Roupp has not provided much length, and the backend of the Giants' bullpen is taxed after Friday.
Don't expect the Dodgers to take their foot off the gas once Roupp exits.
On the flip side of this matchup, the Giants have plenty of momentum coming into this matchup, but they face a buzzsaw in Shohei Ohtani this afternoon.
While Ohtani is expected to go a maximum of three innings on Saturday, Emmett Sheehan is expected to piggyback off him, and that is a deadly combo for the Giants, who have been a below-average lineup against right-handed pitching.
San Francisco won't be able to capitalize on the hitter-friendly conditions if they can't square up the baseball for the majority of this matchup.
Both Ohtani and Sheehan have microscopic average exit velocities. With the Giants already in the bottom third of all MLB lineups in xWOBACON, we shouldn't expect a repeat of Friday's offensive output.
Dodgers vs Giants Prediction, Betting Analysis
While the Dodgers' moneyline price has climbed since opening, it is still playable as they're primed to get back on track.
Not only do they have a tremendous edge on the mound, but their star-studded lineup is more apt to succeed with the wind blowing out at Oracle Park.
Back the Dodgers to win this one.
