Tigers vs. Guardians
By now, it's clear that Cleveland Guardians starter Tanner Bibee has swing-and-miss stuff. He ranks in the 68th percentile in whiff rate and 64th in strikeout rate.
However, this season, his command has not been consistent, and the mistakes both in and out of the zone have cost him.
His WHIP of 1.38 shows just how much traffic he's dealt with, which has limited his strikeout upside. Bibee will be up against a Detroit lineup that's due for a sizable amount of positive regression, as its team xBA is 12 points higher than its current team batting average.
On top of a deceivingly tough matchup, Bibee hasn't proven he can exceed this number often in his young career. He has gone under this total in 64% of his 32 career starts.
That hit rate gives us implied odds of -178, so we have solid line value. Our Action Labs projections also love this under, as they have Bibee slated for just 5.5 strikeouts this afternoon.
Pick: Tanner Bibee Under 6.5 Strikeouts (-139)
Brewers vs. Royals
Brady Singer has quietly been one of the better arms in the American League. He now pitches in the shadow of Cole Ragans, but Singer has made a critical adjustment and seen immediate results this year.
Singer, a former sinkerballer, has become a breaking ball-first pitcher. His slider has been his most effective pitch, and now it's his primary one. A 41% whiff rate and a BAA of .185 show just how effective the pitch has been.
This uptick in slider usage has also allowed him to strike out more batters. Singer has recorded at least five strikeouts in five of his seven starts, and he's in a great matchup to extend his run this afternoon.
Singer will face the Milwaukee Brewers, who have plenty of swing-and-miss potential in their lineup and rank 10th in team strikeout rate. He's primed to go over this number and even has the potential to blow past it.
Multiple books have moved his total to 5.5, and his value holds firm at this total. His implied odds to go over 5.5 are +133, but bet365 has it priced at +155.
Pick: Brady Singer Over 4.5 Strikeouts (-140)
Red Sox vs. Braves
Lastly, we head to a game that everyone will have their eyes on tonight, as Chis Sale will take the mound for the Atlanta Braves against his old club, the Boston Red Sox.
Sale has shown that he still has it, holding a 3.44 ERA and 0.95 WHIP coming into this start.
However, his last outing — and possibly the narrative of this matchup — have inflated his strikeout total. Sale's total is set at 7.5, which he exceeded in his last start against the Seattle Mariners.
Although the Mariners lead the majors in team strikeout rate at 28.2% and the Red Sox are fourth, a nearly 3% difference should be enough to keep him under.
This is especially true since Sale has shown that going over this total has been a challenge for him over the past few seasons. Since 2022, Sale has gone under this number in 75% of his starts.
That hit rate gives us implied odds of -300 and makes this under a smash play tonight.
