The Pittsburgh Pirates are one of the biggest surprises of the 2023 MLB season so far.
No one picked this team to contend for the playoffs before the season, but the Pirates are in the thick of it in the National League Central. With a 25-24 record, the Pirates are just a game and a half back of the Milwaukee Brewers for the division lead entering play Friday.
The Seattle Mariners have a better record at 26-24, but are five and a half games back in the American League West. The Mariners made the playoffs last year and should be a good early test for Pittsburgh.
Can the Pirates stand up to Seattle?
The Parlay (+401):
- Mitch Keller Over 6.5 Strikeouts
- George Kirby Over 5.5 Strikeouts
- Mariners Moneyline
Same-Game Parlay – Pirates vs. Mariners
Mitch Keller Over 6.5 Strikeouts
In case you haven't been paying attention, Mitch Keller is one of the premiere strikeout pitchers in all of baseball this season.
Keller has a 30% strikeout percentage on the season, has gone over this number in each of his last five starts and has had eight, 13, eight, eight, and 10 strikeouts in those games.
The Mariners strike out quite a bit as a team. Seattle's projected lineup has a combined 27% strikeout percentage against right-handed pitching this season. Keller should have no trouble going over this number tonight.
George Kirby Over 5.5 Strikeouts
Kirby has a 20% strikeout percentage this year, but he was quite a bit better with strikeouts last year as a rookie with a 24% strikeout percentage.
Pitching at home against the Pirates here, I could see Kirby going for more strikeouts here. He's gone over this number in four of his last five starts.
The Pirates aren't a heavy strikeout team as their projected lineup has combined for just a 20% strikeout percentage against right-handed pitching this season.
Still, based on Kirby's recent form I think this number is too low in this spot.
Mariners Moneyline
Both starting pitchers have xFIPs below 4.00 this year and both work deep into games. While the Mariners lineup strikes out more, they also have more power.
Seattle's lineup has a combined .169 ISO against right-handed pitching this season compared to Pittsburgh's .133.
The Mariners also have the third-best bullpen ERA this season at 3.07 compared to the Pirates' 3.71 bullpen ERA. Seattle is also at home in this one.
I have to give the edge to the Mariners here in the last leg of the Same Game Parlay.
