St. Louis Cardinals Betting Preview
Monday's game will feature two guys who lean heavily upon their ability to get outs on contact, the first of which is Kyle Leahy. The 29-year-old may not have great expected numbers, coming in with a .275 xBA and 5.38 xERA, but he has the fourth-best defense behind him according to Outs Above Average.
That's helped Leahy to some solid run prevention in 2026, checking in with a 3.73 ERA. His strand rate is somewhat high at 79.4%, too, but he's at around 75% for his career, so it's not as if there's a massive downturn upon us.
No, Leahy is going to be who he is. He's certainly going to put some runners on with his 1.41 WHIP and mediocre 8.5% walk rate, but the gloves behind him have prevented further hits and limited the damage.
Leahy has also made life easy on himself with a 44.5% ground-ball rate, coinciding with a below-average fly-ball rate to help him limit home runs. He's allowed just nine all season, and while a high barrel rate does scare you, he's generally been trustworthy because of the large park he pitches in.
This isn't going to be quite the same with Angel Stadium ranking fifth in Park Factor for home runs, and generally speaking, the setting for his starts has definitely mattered. He owns a 2.94 ERA at home, and he's given up all nine homers on the road, where he owns a 4.69 ERA.
Los Angeles Angels Betting Preview
Even though he hasn't been the menace he was in the month of April, Jose Soriano is still the same capable pitch-to-contact arm he's been for years. He's found some success with strikeouts this year, checking in with a 90th-percentile whiff rate, and while his xBA stands at .242, that's normal for a high-ground-ball arm.
Soriano is in the 90th percentile when it comes to worm-burners, rolling up a grounder 53.1% of the time, and while he has a friendly .381 xSLG, he's surrendered 12 home runs. He's certainly been a victim of his home park at times, giving up six homers in nine starts in Anaheim, and he owns a 3.99 home ERA, which is 88 points higher than on the road.
His defense won't help him much, unlike Leahy's, and he may not have the ability to take this one into his own hands. St. Louis has one of the lowest strikeout rates in baseball at 20.3%, and the Cardinals rank eighth in OPS against ground-ball pitchers.
Of course, this is a team which is dead last in wRC+ over the last two weeks, so the matchup may not really matter here. The Cardinals also aren't known to walk much, and their BB% has dropped under 8% in the last two weeks. That's an area where Soriano does struggle.
Cardinals vs Angels Pick, Betting Analysis
With how badly the Cardinals are swinging the bat right now, I don't see how you can bet on continued regression from Soriano. He may surrender more batted balls than normal inside a tougher park, but St. Louis is sporting a weak .126 ISO in the last two weeks. L.A.'s defense may not be one which we love to bet on, but Soriano knows how to get easy outs on the ground.
For Leahy, the matchup is a bit tougher on the road, but the Angels own a measly .104 ISO in the last two weeks. They lack the power to scare me off Leahy, ranking 23rd for the season, and if the extra-base hits are not there, then I do believe his defense is good enough to bail him out yet again.
The Angels are also walking at a low 8.2% clip in the last 14 days and continue to strike out at an alarming rate, so there's a great chance both of these men get help from their opponents en route to a low-scoring affair.
