Diamondbacks vs Nationals MLB Betting Preview
Story: Back the Nats to Reign Supreme in National League Clash
The Nationals will host the Diamondbacks on Saturday afternoon in the second of a three-game homestand at Nationals Park in Washington.
23-year-old left-hander Mitch Bratt will take the mound for Arizona, while the Nats will send out lefty Foster Griffin, who will surely be looking to build upon what has been a phenomenal 2026 campaign thus far.
For the first leg in our SGP, I feel great backing the Nationals on their moneyline given the club’s massive edge on the mound on Saturday night.
Despite Nats’ 30-year-old left-hander Foster Griffin having entered this season with minimal experience pitching in the Major Leagues with just eight frames on the mound prior to 2026, the first-time All-Star has been nothing short of sensational across his 20 outings thus far.
Griffin enters this contest with an 11-2 overall record on the season and has recorded a very impressive 2.68 ERA on the bump, which ranks 12th amongst all starters in 2026.
Washington’s lefty has been extremely efficient across his 117 innings pitched (IP), with Foster also ranking inside the top-10 with a 1.03 WHIP in 2026.
Though Griffin was selected in the first round of the MLB Draft by the Kansas City Royals back in 2014, the Nationals’ left-hander was completely dismissed, having spent the majority of his career pitching in the minor leagues.
While Washington’s 30-year-old has quickly established himself as one of the premier arms in baseball prior to the All-Star break, we have yet to see much from Diamondbacks’ rookie Mitch Bratt, who has only started three games to kick off his MLB career.
Despite a small sample size, the Snakes’ 23-year-old lefty has been largely impressive across his first 11 frames pitching in the Big Leagues. In his first three outings, Bratt has recorded a 5.06 ERA along with a dreadful 1.78 WHIP.
Given a sizable edge on the mound heading into Saturday’s National League clash, I expect the Nationals ML to be a solid foundation for our SGP.
Pick: Nationals ML
For the second leg of our SGP ahead of Saturday’s matchup, I favor backing Nationals’ superstar SS CJ Abrams to exceed his 1.5 HRR (Hits + Runs + RBIs) mark as he enters this contest in scorching form at the plate.
Despite Abrams’ superior splits versus right-handers as opposed to lefties, I still expect the 25-year-old to have a massive edge over Bratt, who is struggling mightily on the mound and making just his fourth start in his MLB career thus far.
The Diamondbacks’ lefty relies heavily on the command of his arsenal considering he does not have overwhelming velocity behind his pitches and has an extremely low strikeout rate.
Bratt often throws his four-seam fastballs with a heavy vertical break up in the zone, which is the type of pitch Abrams loves to hit given his quick, compact swing that is extremely effective versus lower-velocity offerings in his bread basket.
CJ is on an absolute tear right now with the Nats’ phenom currently ranking second in all of baseball in RBIs with 76 on the season, trailing just Astros’ slugger Yordan Alvarez.
While Abrams was a highly-touted prospect who entered his 2026 campaign with high hopes, Washington’s lefty has drastically outperformed his expectations and has cemented his spot as one of the premier hitters in all of baseball right now.
In a game where the Nationals could frequently have runners on the basepaths given Bratt’s struggles on the mound across his first three outings, I expect this to be a great spot to target the HRR market as I expect Washington to prevail quite handily.
Though I typically favor pairing two negatively correlated wagers in my value SGPs, this is a prime matchup for Abrams to maintain his elite form in the box, and I have high confidence in his thriving at the plate on Saturday evening.
