The Guardians were in a 5-0 hole before they got their first crack on offense Tuesday evening, as the White Sox bats were cooking from the first pitch. Cleveland made a furious comeback to tie the game late, but Chicago prevailed late and won, 7-5.
Tonight, the Guardians turn to their ace, Tanner Bibee, to stop the bleeding in the series' rubber match Erick Fedde will be on the bump for the Sox, and he's gotten off to a good start in 2024.
So, where does the betting value lie in this AL Central clash? Let's make a White Sox vs. Guardians pick and prediction after looking at the MLB odds for Wednesday, April 10.
The injuries continue to pile up for the Sox, as third baseman Yoan Moncada exited Tuesday's game with a lower-leg injury. It appears Moncada is headed to the Injured List, where he'll join outfielders Luis Robert Jr. and Eloy Jimenez, who are already on the shelf.
The Sox never had aspirations to be a great baseball team entering the 2024 season, but without three of their key offensive players, their season has quickly taken a turn for the worse.
Bibee has allowed only one lone hit against Chicago's projected starting lineup. With a lineup that's depleted without Jimenez and Robert, the loss of Moncada makes it tough for me to buy the Sox in this matchup.
Bibee is a tad overrated, in my opinion, but he's still a quality major-league hurler. With first baseman Andrew Vaughn being the only hitter who has a slugging percentage above .450 for Chicago, the Sox are in for a long night at the plate.
I would take yesterday's offensive output with a grain of salt. I don't expect them to provide any run support for Fedde. Fedde pitched really well last season overseas and has flashed potential in his first couple of starts this season.
Fedde currently has a 26% CSW on the year, which suggests his ERA is a bit fabricated.
He's still giving up a lot of fly balls and not missing enough bats for me to confidently say he can hold the Guardians' bats at bay. I want nothing to do with the Sox here.
The Guardians climbed out of a 5-0 hole yesterday, but their bats could not complete the comeback in the late stages of the game. Tonight, they have a much better chance of sustaining a lead throughout the contest.
Bibbe is racking up punch-outs to begin the season, and he now faces a depleted Chicago offense in a juicy matchup. He's still walking too many batters for my liking, but it's encouraging to see his K rate and groundball rate increase from last season.
The Guardians have a nice matchup against Fedde, especially since they continue to put the ball in play on a consistent basis. Fedde tends to give up a home run or two per start, so don't be surprised to see Josh Naylor or Jose Ramirez have a great day at the plate.
After a tough game yesterday, I expect a nice bounce-back from the Guardians. Even if their offense struggles against Fedde, I have faith in Bibbe and the bullpen to contain the Sox throughout.
White Sox vs Guardians
Betting Pick & Prediction
I think Fedde is a regression candidate moving forward, but his increased strikeout rate suggests that he might have turned a corner.
With that said, I really like the Sox team total under.
The lineup is completely depleted without Jimenez, Robert and Moncada. There may be some surprises in the team's young players, but this is not a great matchup for them.
Bibee should stifle Chicago's bats after its recent offensive explosion, and he should bridge the gap nicely to the bullpen.
