San Antonio Spurs vs Los Angeles Lakers NBA Preview
On Sunday night, the Spurs suffered their first loss of the season, 130-118, to the Suns. They also lost Dylan Harper to injury after he scored 12 points in 11 minutes.
The No. 2 overall pick will miss multiple weeks with a strained left calf. They are close to getting back De'Aaron Fox, but he remains out with a right hamstring strain.
Meanwhile, the Lakers won their fourth straight game on Monday night 123-115 on the second night of a back-to-back in Portland.
They were down Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, but Rui Hachimura, DeAndre Ayton, and Nick Smith Jr. combined for 82 points.
I would expect Doncic and Reaves to play tonight, but Reaves is listed as questionable with a right groin injury.
Though it is still very early in the season, these teams currently occupy the third and fourth spots in the Western Conference.
Both teams have aspirations of postseason runs, so this could be an impactful game to the standings down the line.
The Lakers have won eight of the last 10 meetings, but many of those matchups featured LeBron James and Anthony Davis. James remains out with sciatica.
The matchup will put the Lakers' fifth-ranked offense against the Spurs' second-ranked defense.
It will also feature two early candidates for MVP in Victor Wembanyama (+400) and Doncic at +450.
Wembanyama has blocked four shots in four of his first six games and is leading the league with 4.7 per game.
He is averaging 26.7 points and 13.7 rebounds per game and averaged nearly 24 and 11 against the Lakers last season.
Doncic will play just his second game against the Spurs since joining the Lakers, but he is very familiar with them from his time with the Spurs' in-state rival, Mavericks.
Doncic has averaged 28.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 9.5 assists in 23 games against the Spurs. Expect Stephon Castle to draw the Doncic assignment tonight.
Spurs vs Lakers Betting Predictions, Analysis
While the players in this series have changed, there has been one constant — a lot of points on the scoreboard.
The last 10 meetings are 6-3-1 to the over while averaging 234 points per game in that span.
Additionally, the Lakers are 7-1 to the over this season, including four games against defensive minded teams like Minnesota and Portland.
Doncic has scored at least 29 points in every game this season while averaging 41.3 on the season.
With a couple of days of rest for him, I like him for at least 30 points tonight.
Meanwhile, Wembanyama has recorded 35+ points and rebounds in five of first six games and four blocks in four of them.
Castle has scored 20 points in each of his last three games and averaged 19.5 points against the Lakers last season.
Both Wembanyama and Castle should find success against a Lakers defense that is 19th in defensive rating this season.
