Pitt vs. Stanford
By Ryan Minion
While Stanford was given the 10-seed in the ACC Tournament — requiring it to play in the first round — this Cardinal bunch is one of the hottest teams in the conference.
Stanford has won four consecutive games, having just defeated Pittsburgh (its first-round opponent) and its potential second-round opponent, NC State.
I'm inclined to back Stanford in this spot as it comes into the event in far better form than Pittsburgh.
Arguably more significant, the Cardinal not only have one of the best players in the ACC, but also in the entire country in Ebuka Okorie. The offensive impact of an elite superstar can do wonders in the month of March.
I think Tuesday’s ACC showdown has the potential to be very closely-contested on a neutral floor, so I'll be looking to back the Cardinal on the moneyline.
I'll also be taking a shot on Cardinal “diaper dandy” Okorie to shred a weak Panthers perimeter defense and soar over his 3-point total.
Pick: Stanford ML -200
Syracuse vs. SMU
By Ryan Minion
Tuesday afternoon’s first-round matchup in the ACC Tournament features two teams in horrific form, both of whom are in a dire, must-win scenarios.
While the 11th-seeded Mustangs have looked atrocious, dropping four games to conclude their regular season schedule, I still think SMU is the superior team in this matchup.
In the first meeting between these ACC foes, the Orange won in spectacular fashion, nailing a buzzer-beater on their home floor to defeat the Mustangs by one point.
I'm definitely willing to buy into the revenge narrative of this ACC first-round matchup as the Mustangs avoid the sweep.
I feel far more comfortable backing the superior offense in SMU, with a starting five all capable of generating offense. Meanwhile, the Orange's offensive flow has proven stagnant at times.
I also fear Donnie Freeman might be overwhelmed by the presence of Andy Enfield’s Turkish monster clogging the paint, making it tough to find open looks near the basket.
I expect SMU to advance to the second round of the ACC Tournament, given the team’s greater experience and offensive scoring prowess. I'm willing to lay the points on the Mustangs, and I expect a huge performance from Boopie Miller.
Pick: SMU -4.5
Wake Forest vs. Virginia Tech
By Jordan Mann
Wake Forest boasts a top-100 defense, per KenPom, but since Jan. 20, it ranks 197th in defensive efficiency while coming in at 328th in defensive turnover rate.
In its most recent matchup between these teams, Virginia Tech had six players score in double figures.
As a team, the Hokies racked up 20 assists to five turnovers in the 82-63 win.
Even if Nate Calmese plays for Wake, he'll have his hands full trying to keep up with Ben Hammond.
The Hokies will make a statement after their frustrating loss to Virginia and beat a depleted Wake Forest team.
Pick: Virginia Tech -2.5
