Maryland Basketball
The Terrapins are hunting down their first big win of the Buzz Williams era. They enter this game in Wisconsin with a 2-1 record, with their wins coming over Coppin State and Alcorn State, and the loss coming in ugly fashion to Georgetown.
Maryland is off to a brutal offensive start. The Terps shot 34% from downtown in their opener against Coppin State. Since then, Maryland has shot the ball very poorly. In the loss to Georgetown, the Terps went 4-for-21 from 3 (19%), and then they shot 8-for-28 (28%) against Alcorn State.
For one, let's keep an eye on the status of Myles Rice. He's by far the top guard for Maryland, and he missed the Terps' last game. He was the lone bright spot against Georgetown, scoring 19 points.
Besides Rice, I have very little faith in Maryland's guard play. Andre Mills played well in the two buy games, but he struggled with the Hoyas' defensive pressure.
The other two guards — David Coit and Darius Adams — are playing very poorly. Coit, a 5-foot-11 guard, struggles against size, and Adams is shooting 26% from the field.
I have to give credit to forward Pharrel Payne. He followed Williams to Maryland, and he's been sensational. Payne leads the Terps with 20 points and eight rebounds per game. The 6-foot-9, 250-pound center is an imposing force and can be a real problem for Marquette.
Defense is the key for Maryland. So far, the Terps are forcing turnovers on 20% of defensive possessions and rank 19th in KenPom's defensive efficiency.
But back to the offense, I expect an even better unit to emerge in College Park once Solomon Washington is back. He'll give the Terps a dynamite interior with him and Payne. He seems unlikely to return here, though. He just got out of a boot, and the team is probably playing it safe.
Marquette Basketball
Let's face it: After how badly Marquette lost to Indiana last weekend, it could use a momentum booster against a power-conference squad.
I'm still trying to figure out what Marquette is. At its core, this Golden Eagles squad is built to be an elite defense. Shaka Smart is, and always will be, a defensive-first coach. So far, Marquette is just 41st in defensive efficiency, which is almost 20 spots worse than last season.
In my view, Marquette will be fine long-term. Allowing 1.32 PPP and 50% shooting deep against Indiana will skew the numbers for a bit since the sample is so small. Some of that was Marquette playing poor defense, but also, Indiana is one of the best offensive teams in America.
That performance matters, but I'm not letting it totally cloud my view of what should be a dominant defense.
What matters most is Marquette limiting scoring inside the arc, and it ranks 49th in 2-point field goal defense.
The other most important thing is the staple of a Smart's defenses: forcing turnovers. The Golden Eagles are forcing turnovers at a 21.5% clip, so we'll check the box on that as well.
Offensively, Marquette will face some struggles. It won't be easy to score without a true stud point guard like Tyler Kolek or Kam Jones.
That said, the Golden Eagles have a stud in Chase Ross, who leads the team with 18 points per game.
They desperately need a secondary scorer to help Ross, though. Nobody else on the team averages double-digits, but four players average between nine and 9.5 points a night. Backcourt pieces Zaide Lowery and Nigel James Jr. could be the ones who help Ross boost Marquette's offense.
Maryland vs. Marquette Betting Analysis
Both Marquette and Maryland have flaws, but the worst flaw a team can have against the Golden Eagles is poor guard play.
Smart's squad will amp up the pressure and try to make life difficult for the struggling Maryland guards. Nothing will come easy for the Terps in this one.
I'm cool with grabbing Marquette at -6.5 to -7.5. These teams play very different tempos. Maryland wants to play slow, and Marquette wants to push the pace. If the Terps get sloppy with the ball, the score could get ugly.
My Pick: Marquette -5.5 (Play to -7.5)
