Idaho Vandals Betting Preview: Lots of Changes
Week 1 is all about FCS teams collecting checks while hopefully avoiding catastrophe, and this game is no exception for an Idaho team that's expected to be one of the better programs at the FCS level.
For the Vandals, a season opener in Eugene is less than ideal for an offense that's extremely inexperienced. Idaho lost one of the FCS’s most exciting quarterbacks Gevani McCoy — who transferred this offseason to Oregon State — and will instead turn to sophomore Jack Layne.
For Layne’s first season under center, he won’t be surrounded by a single senior. The Vandals must replace two 1,000-yard wideouts from a season ago and they have a two-deep offensive line, which features freshmen or sophomores at eight of the 10 spots.
There’s a little more continuity defensively for Idaho, as the Vandals return eight starters to a unit that ranked 28th in the FCS with 22.1 points allowed per game.
Defensive end Keyshawn James-Newby and defensive tackle Dallas Afalava were both All-Big Sky selections in 2023 for a defensive front that should be the strength of this team.
Oregon Ducks Betting Preview: Welcome Gabriel to Eugene
Oregon officially begins life in the Big Ten with what could be Lanning’s best roster to date. The Ducks have continued to win the transfer portal and high school recruiting, leaving them with a team that should be a national title contender.
The key to their likely success this season is the addition of veteran Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel. In a similar fashion to Bo Nix, Gabriel arrives in Eugene with more yards, touchdowns and having taken more snaps at the FBS level than any other returning quarterback in the country.
And he’ll certainly have plenty of options to spread the ball around to.
Oregon scored one of the biggest prizes from this offseason’s portal in the form of Texas A&M wideout Evan Stewart, who'll be complemented by the returning production of receivers Tez Johnson and Traeshon Holden, a duo that combined for over 1,500 yards receiving and 16 touchdowns in 2023.
Running back Jordan James, who led the Pac-12 in yards per carry (7.1) and finished tied for third with 11 rushing touchdowns, also returns behind an offensive line that should pick up right where it left off last year — as one of the country’s best.
The defense finished 2023 as one of the best in the Pac-12, and it should be even better this go-around, thanks to a heavy dose of returning production that was also bolstered by the transfer portal.
The only big question is whether the Ducks can maintain a consistent pass rush with the loss of Brandon Dorlus.
