Memphis vs East Carolina Preview

Memphis Tigers Betting Preview
Memphis lost a tough one last week against Tulane. The Tigers fell behind late, and the comeback came up short.
Quarterback Brendon Lewis returned from injury but was visibly limping and was largely ineffective before being replaced late.
I worry about how Memphis will respond on Saturday after seeing its conference championship and playoff chances dashed.
Memphis’ offense is balanced and explosive, averaging 430 yards per game at 6.4 yards per play.
The ground game is explosive, with Sutton Smith and Greg Desrosiers Jr. each averaging over 5.5 yards per carry. Lewis is also a significant factor in the run game, and his absence has been noticeable.
I struggle to see the passing game being effective with a backup quarterback, as AJ Hill and Arrington Maiden have struggled in limited action this season.
Memphis’ defense has played well for the most part this season, although the Tigers have struggled mightily in a few spots. They were terrible against Tulane, both in the trenches and on the back end.
East Carolina Pirates Betting Preview
East Carolina has been a pleasant surprise this season, specifically on defense.
The Pirates rank 27th nationally in Success Rate allowed and 17th in Havoc, amassing 24 sacks and 75 tackles for loss. At the same time, the secondary has been better than expected.
The defense has forced plenty of third-and-long situations, helping them allow just 17.5 points per game this year.
East Carolina’s passing attack has been solid this season, with quarterback Katin Houser throwing the ball on time and cutting down on turnovers.
The ground attack is servicable but not explosive behind a running-back-by-committee approach.
I like how the Pirates move the football, although they struggle in the red zone.

Memphis vs East Carolina Pick, Betting Analysis
I like the Under.
The Pirates’ defense is a vastly underrated unit. And, despite their lightning-quick tempo, their offense is relatively inefficient. They rank 97th nationally in Rush Success Rate.
I think Memphis’ defense will show up and cause problems for East Carolina’s offense. The Tigers rank fourth nationally in EPA per Rush allowed.
East Carolina will struggle to run the football.
I also worry about the Pirates’ ability to pass protect against the Tigers’ front. East Carolina’s offensive scheme is timing-based, and any slight disruption can complicate everything.
East Carolina is also horrific in the red zone, while Memphis is a strong Defensive Finishing Drives squad.
Finally, Memphis’ quarterback situation won’t help its offensive situation.
Pick: Under 56.5 or Better
