Michigan State Spartans Betting Preview: Smith on Major Hot Seat

The sky is falling for Michigan State football. After a promising 3-0 start, Jonathan Smith's Spartans have dropped three consecutive games in Big Ten play.

The on-field product, along with the confidence that Smith is the guy for the job long-term, is growing increasingly weaker by the minute.

After competitive losses (and covers) to USC and Nebraska, a case could be made that Michigan State was close to getting over the hump.

That all came crashing down in one of the more embarrassing results of the 2025 college football season last week, a 38-13 loss to UCLA on Michigan State's homecoming.

The Bruins ripped off 38 unanswered points over the first three quarters and by the time the game concluded, Michigan State's entire first string was on the bench to watch the crowd file out to a chorus of boos.

So much of Smith's tenure at Michigan State has been tied to the success of his hand-chosen quarterback, Aidan Chiles. Chiles transferred over to Michigan State from Oregon State and showed signs of emerging into a dynamic playmaker in the non-conference portion of the schedule.

But Chiles has been banged up and unable to escape countless pressures thanks to a woeful offensive line.

Last week seemed to be the official breaking point. With Chiles exiting the game, Michigan State's backup Alessio Milivojevic entered and actually outplayed Chiles, totaling 100 yards on eight completions and a late touchdown.

Chiles is listed as questionable for this game, but even if he plays, it's hard to wonder what you'll get from a less than 100% dual threat.  Take Chiles out of the equation and you take away this offense's heartbeat — and possibly the heartbeat of the entire Smith era.

It's not an exaggeration to say that Smith is coaching for his job this week — but the opponent may have something to say about that.

Indiana Hoosiers Betting Preview: Cignetti & Co. Cooking This Season

The last time Curt Cignetti was served up as a head coach of a terrible football team on the hot seat in a "must-compete" spot?

Google it.

Or don't — I have you covered. A 66-0 "run-up-the-score" win, full of style points, at the expense of Purdue and ex-head coach Ryan Walters last season, who was fired shortly after.

Cignetti's competitive streak knows no limits, as evidenced by an amazing stat in his two years at Indiana already. Indiana is 5-0 against the spread in games in which it's favored by 27 points or more, and the Hoosiers win by an average of 59.6 points per game in those contests.

Indiana has covered the spread by an average of 22.5 points above the line in those games. That's insane!

Nobody is better at embarrassing an overmatched opponent than Cignetti. Nobody relishes the opportunity to assert their dominance more than Indiana football. And make no mistake — the Hoosiers are dominant.

The takeaway from Indiana's statement win over Oregon last week should be clear — there's nothing fraudulent about Indiana in Year 2 of the Cignetti era.

The Hoosiers have playmakers at every skill position, they have size and speed in the trenches and they have a superstar quarterback that has a claim for best field general in all of college football.

A year ago, bettors could nitpick the Hoosiers and play skeptic after their College Football Playoff loss to Notre Dame. Now, we know what Indiana football has become an undeniable force in college football.

Michigan State vs Indiana Pick, Betting Analysis

It's crazy to think back to two offseasons ago when both these programs were hiring for a new head coach. Now, their fates couldn't be any different.

Indiana is on a collision course with its second consecutive trip to the College Football Playoff, while Smith is just hoping to get out of Bloomington with a job.

There's no area of the field where Michigan State can exploit an advantage. There's no schematic hole to attack. The best plan of attack for the Spartans will be to simply hope that Cignetti doesn't run up the score.

There shouldn't be any hope.

Pick: Indiana -26.5
