Mississippi State Football vs Arizona State Football Preview

Mississippi State Bulldogs Football Preview: Don't Expect A Lot From MSU

Mississippi State took care of business against Eastern Kentucky last week, winning 56-7. The Bulldogs were dependent on the big play as they had a 30th-percentile Success Rate. However, they averaged 7.98 yards per play and posted an 87th-percentile EPA per play.

Jeff Lebby is taking over as the head coach of the Bulldogs this season after serving as the offensive coordinator over the last two years. Five starters returned on this offense that ranked 77th in SP+ last season.

The Bulldogs are replacing three offensive linemen, as well as their top five receivers from a season ago. Baylor transfer Blake Shapen took over at quarterback to try to help revive this offense, too.

Defensively, this squad ranked 51st in SP+ last season. The Bulldogs returned only five starters on this side of the ball and need to replace six of their top seven tacklers from 2023.

This team hasn’t had a chance to display what it has yet, but most aren't expecting much from Mississippi State this season.

Arizona State Sun Devils Football Preview: Leavitt Time

Arizona State finished last season ranked 3-9 with the No. 101 SP+ offense and No. 89 defense in year one under Kenny Dillingham.

Arizona State turned a lot of heads in Week 1 as it beat the breaks off of what was expected to be a good Wyoming team. The Sun Devils won this matchup 48-7 as 6.5-point favorites.

ASU posted a 75th-percentile Success Rate and 74th-percentile offensive EPA per play while holding Wyoming to a ninth-percentile Success Rate and first-percentile EPA per play.

Quarterback was a never-ending carousel for Arizona State a season ago. This was one of the reasons it was never able to get off the mat, as it used four different quarterbacks over the course of the season before eventually using Cam Skattebo as a wildcat quarterback at one point.

This season, the Sun Devils send out redshirt freshman Sam Leavitt, who played in four games last season as a true freshman at Michigan State.

Leavitt went 14-for-22 for 244 yards and two touchdowns last weekend. He averaged 0.24 EPA per play as he was sacked just twice and didn’t turn the ball over. He also ran for another 61 yards on six carries.

ASU’s offense did return its top three rushers — as well as three offensive linemen — which should help with its inexperience at receiver and quarterback.

The turnaround may take a bit longer for this defense, but last week, the it was impressive, forcing three turnovers and accumulating three sacks.

The Sun Devils lack depth on the defensive line and returned just four defensive starters, but they do have a strong defensive backfield, particularly at safety.

This line opened at 1.5 points in favor of the Sun Devils, but it's been bet up to 5.5 as the week has gone on.

Arizona State’s potential improvements are notable, but I want to see more before I fully dive into backing the Sun Devils after this line has already moved dramatically towards them.

Instead I'll look to the over in this game as I believe the defense is the weak point of both teams, despite how ASU looked last weekend.

I like taking this over at 58.5 points, and I would bet it up to just 59 points (that's one of the more key numbers in CFB totals).

ASU vs. Mississippi State Prediction: Over 58.5 Points (-110) | Bet to 59
