Texas State Bobcats 2024 Season Preview

After a solid season in the first year of the G.J. Kinne era, the Texas State Bobcats are looking to break through in 2024.

The Bobcats wrapped up the season with an 8-5 record that culminated in a 45-21 First Responder Bowl victory over Rice. Now, they enter the new season with the second-shortest odds to win the Sun Belt at +375.

Texas State brings back plenty of talent, led by do-it-all running back Ismail Mahdi. The all-purpose star finished 2023 with 1,331 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground to go along with 20 receptions for 275 yards and another score through the air. The Bobcats also added quarterback Jordan McCloud via the transfer portal after the former James Madison Duke won Sun Belt Player of the Year.

Texas State comes into the season at 59th in Action Network's betting power ratings, putting it behind only conference favorite Appalachian State. The Bobcats' power rating is about seven points lower than App State, which means we'd project them as 7-point underdogs against the Mountaineers on a neutral field.

Here’s how you can bet on Texas State this season and some key things to know.

Betting on Texas State

There are plenty of ways to bet Texas State Bobcats football this season, including futures like Sun Belt Championship odds and college football win totals. Then, of course, we have single-game markets that feature moneylines, spreads and totals (also known as the over/under).

Betting Texas State Moneyline

Now that we mentioned moneylines, how do they work? Here’s how a moneyline might look at a sportsbook like DraftKings or FanDuel:

Because Texas State has a minus sign (-) by its name, the Bobcats would be considered favorites in this scenario. Similarly, because Louisiana has a plus sign (+) by its name, the Ragin' Cajuns would be underdogs.

Odds can be better understood if you think in terms of betting $10 or $100. A wager on the Bobcats means every $120 bet nets $100 in profit (plus the $120 stake back). Now, the underdog is a little different. A $100 wager on the Louisiana moneyline would profit $100 (plus the $100 stake back).

Most bettors won't place a wager on the moneyline if it's heavily juiced, but many people create parlays using the moneylines of favorites. Use our parlay calculator to get an understanding of what the payouts will look like when building a parlay. You can also add bets to your betslip on our college football odds page to automatically get the best parlay price.

Betting Texas State's Spread

Betting the spread is similar to betting a moneyline, except for the fact that it involves points. The spread is essentially an equalizer when it comes to sports betting. Even some of the best teams in college football are expected to go around .500 against the spread because the spread is based on each team's ability, injuries and recent form.

  • Texas State -9.5 (-110)
  • Troy +9.5 ( -110)

If a bettor were to place a wager on Texas State -9.5, the Bobcats would have to win by 10 points or more for that bet to cash. But if someone bet Troy +9.5, they would need the Trojans to lose by nine points or fewer or win the game outright.

In this instance, you would also be paying -110 juice, meaning you must wager $1.10 for every $1 you want to win. If you’re unfamiliar with calculating odds, read up on how to use American odds or use our odds calculator.

Betting Texas State's Totals

The other big way to bet Texas State in a single game would be the total — also known as the over/under. The over/under is simply a bet on how many points both teams will combine to score.

  • Over: 60.5 (-115)
  • Under: 60.5 (-105)

A wager on the over means that the final score would have to add up to 61 points or more to win. A bet on the under, meanwhile, would need both teams to combine for 60 points or fewer to cash.

There’s a difference in payout with the over and under in this game as well. In this game, you must wager $1.15 for every $1 you want to win if you bet the over and $1.05 for every $1 you want to win if you bet the under.

Texas State Player Props & More

While college football player props do exist, they're only available in certain states. And with the number of scandals involving college teams, the number of states in which college player props are offered continues to dwindle.

If college player props are available in your state, you may find markets like passing/rushing/receiving yardage totals or touchdown props. However, U.S. sportsbooks will offer far fewer markets for college players than they will for the NFL for a variety of reasons. The markets for player props also tend to be more limited for smaller games, like your typical Group of Five matchups.
