Western Kentucky 2025 Season Preview

The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers enter the 2025 season under seventh-year head coach Tyson Helton, aiming to build on their consistent performances in Conference USA. Despite significant roster turnover, including the loss of key players to the transfer portal, WKU remains a contender in the conference.

The offense will be led by quarterback Maverick McIvor, a transfer from Abilene Christian, who is expected to lead the Hilltoppers’ passing attack. Supporting him are key contributors on the offensive line, anchored by veteran Marshall Jackson, and a receiving corps featuring top talents ready to make an impact. The Hilltoppers also bring in new offensive coordinator Rick Bowie to help rejuvenate the offensive strategies.

Defensively, WKU faces challenges with the loss of several starters but will rely on experienced defensive backs Demarko Williams and Kent Robinson to anchor the secondary. The defensive line and linebacker corps will need to step up to maintain the Hilltoppers’ defensive competitiveness in Conference USA.

The 2025 schedule presents a mix of non-conference and conference matchups. WKU opens the season against Sam Houston on August 23, with additional non-conference games against North Alabama, Toledo, Nevada, and LSU. Conference play begins with a home game against FIU on October 14, with other key matchups including Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, and Middle Tennessee.

With a blend of experienced players and promising newcomers, the Hilltoppers aim to compete for a strong finish in Conference USA in 2025. The leadership of Coach Helton and contributions from key players will be instrumental in WKU’s pursuit of a conference championship and a successful bowl appearance.

Betting on Western Kentucky Hilltoppers

Among the variety of markets for Western Kentucky, and college football in general, one of the perennially popular ones are futures.

In short, a future bet is just a wager on any event or outcome happening in the future. It can be individual like Heisman futures or team based like who will notch the most wins or even conference specific like who the winner of the C-USA will be.

Beyond those futures, you can take a look at some of the game-to-game markets we’ve outlined below with the biggest three being moneylines, totals (often called over/unders),  point spreads or player props.

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers moneylines

You’ll see moneylines commonly displayed on most sports media companies because it’s easy to understand and easy to wager on. A moneyline bet is simply a wager on the winner or particular contest.

While this is a compelling market, it’s important to note that just because teams win often doesn’t necessarily guarantee their value in the moneyline market. Teams that are often favored and favored heavily, aren’t always worth the wager.

On big sportsbook like DraftKings or bet365, this is often how they’ll be displayed:

- Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (+122)

- UTEP Miners (-140)

In this example, the Miners would be the favorite and the parenthetical number reflects the perspective pay out. Based on those odds, you’d need to wager $1.40 to get $1 in profit.

As an individual markets, moneylines are not as effective. They can often be a part of a parlay though which have become increasingly popular with the advent of varied betting markets. To assess the viability of your particular parlay, you can use the parlay calculator or check out ways to compare parlay prices.

Betting Western Kentucky spreads

Betting the spread, or covering as it’s called, is very popular with football wagers given the uniformity and predictability of the scoring. Simply put, a spread bet is a wager on the difference between the winning and losing team’s score.

Take the example below:

- Western Kentucky Hilltoppers +7.5 (-110)

- Boston College Golden Eagles -7.5 (-110)

With spread betting, there’s two components. There’s the actual spread which is the first number and denotes the expected difference between the two teams scores so the Eagles are expected to win by eight points or more. Thus, wagering on the Hilltoppers to cover is a bet that they will lose by less than seven points or less.

The parenthetical number are the odds. So with each market you’d need to wager $1.10 to get $1 in profit. Notably, betting on a team to cover does not necessarily mean a wager on that team to win but rather than you expect that team to lose by less than the expected amount.

You can review some tools from Action Network about understanding odds to help simplify the process.

Western Kentucky totals

Betting the total, or the over/under, is another common college football market. This is just a wager on the cumulative amount of points scored by both teams. Similar to betting the spread, there are two components: the actual total and the odds.

The example below will demonstrate:

- Over 48.5 (-115)

- Under 48.5 (-105)

With the example above, a bet on the over indicates that you expect the score to be at least 49 or higher. The inverse would be an expectation that the score would be 48 or under. Given the odds shown, you’d need to bet on the over $1.15 to get $1 in profit or $1.05 on the under to get $1 in profit.

Hilltoppers player props

Player props, the final market we’ll discuss today, is in unique position. Many states that allow for online betting on collegiate markets do not allow for college player props. A player prop is an over/under wager on an specific market. It can be anything from touchdown passes to receiving yards.

You can also get more granular and bet on a specific players particular stats in a specific quarter, as many operators like PrizePicks or other DFS operators offer markets on quarter player props.

You can review which states allow for college player props here. Player props are also an excellent option for parlays as you can easily pair things together.
