This article contains predictions for an old game.

The Old Dominion Monarchs (1-3) are coming off a big upset win at Bowling Green last week by the score of 30-27. The Monarchs were near-touchdown underdogs and managed to pull off an improbable upset.

They hit the road to take on the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (3-1) on Saturday night. Coastal is 3-1 on the season and will look to earn their first Sun Belt win.

Oddsmakers have the Monarchs as 5.5-point underdogs and the total set at 53.5.

Let’s dive into Saturday night’s clash where I break down my Old Dominion vs Coastal Carolina predictions and college football picks for Saturday, Oct. 5.

Old Dominion Football vs Coastal Carolina Football Preview

Old Dominion Monarchs Betting Preview: An Overperforming Squad

Last week's box score against Bowling Green must be more accurate, as the Monarchs had no business winning the game. They put up 333 yards of offense but were outgained by the Falcons by 170.

It's an exciting matchup, as their defense has been the team's anchor. They'll be taking on a Coastal squad that has been excellent offensively thus far.

Old Dominion was a team that I faded last year, and it was fortunate to have five wins. I faded it once again, and it managed to pull out yet another improbable victory early in the season.

Quarterback Grant Wilson was 6-for-12 last week for two touchdowns but left the game due to injury. Colton Joseph took over and led ODU on a game-winning drive with three minutes remaining.

Joseph was 6-of-13 with 26 yards, and it's expected that he is going to draw another start. I don't understand why head coach Ricky Rahne has put his vote of confidence in Joseph, as he's highlighted that last week was not even close to his ceiling.

It's unknown if Joseph is starting because of Wilson's injury, but it sounds like it's the coach's decision. That said, I have even more questions about the offense.

They enter the matchup outside the top 100 in Rushing and Passing Success Rate, including 125th in Havoc Allowed. They draw a decent matchup against a Chants defense, but their secondary is their clear strength.

I need help envisioning consistent offensive success with Joseph under center, so it'll be up to the strength of their team on the defensive side of the ball to keep them in the game.

Defensively, the Monarchs will have their hands full despite their strong performance thus far. Their defensive metrics are also misleading, especially given they allowed over 500 yards of offense last week.

The defense has been excellent at holding opponents in the red zone, but it's due for regression when entering Sun Belt play. There are too many uncertainties on offense to trust the Monarchs, and they are definitely a flat spot after their dramatic upset win last week.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Betting Preview: Can the Defense Hold Up?

The Chants were pushed around last week against Virginia, losing by three scores at home. The scoreboard might seem lopsided, but they put up nearly 400 yards of offense.

There are a lot of questions surrounding the team, especially given their schedule thus far. Coastal has beaten Jacksonville State, William & Mary and Temple.

That's not murderer's row by any stretch and against a first decent opponent, it allowed 43 points last week. The offense has been solid thus far, but how good is it if its schedule has been soft through four games?

Regardless, the Chants are top-45 in Rushing Success Rate and Line Yards and fourth in Havoc Allowed. They run the ball 62% of the time, and they might be tested against a Monarchs defense that has shut down opposing teams on the ground thus far.

Something has to give in the matchup, as it will be strength-on-strength against the ODU defense in the Finishing Drives department. If the Chants put up big offensive numbers on the scoreboard, we'll better understand how good the unit truly is.

Defensively, it has been a disaster thus far. The pass defense is 27th in Success Rate but is 95th in PFF coverage.

The Monarchs don't throw the ball too often, but they have been pushed around against opposing rush offenses thus far. Remarkably, they are 3-1, given that they are 127th in PFF tackling and 105th in Quality Drives.

They have difficulty getting off the field, and their opponents have been excellent in the red area against them. ODU loves to go fast on offense, but the Chants should catch a break with a severe downgrade at quarterback.

The spot screams to lay the points with Coastal, but the defense needs to hold up if it wants to cover the number.

How To Make College Football Picks For My Old Dominion vs Coastal Carolina Prediction

Coastal's offense should have the edge in this game, but given its opponents, its body of work needs more robust data to sell me on them. The Chanticleers can win the game, but I'd instead approach the total.

Despite going lightning-quick on offense, the Monarchs tend to go nowhere fast. With that said, the Chants will lean on their running game, and a lot of clocks should be churning through most of the afternoon.

Joseph is a severe downgrade at QB, and ODU should be flat after last week. However, it might turn into an ugly game rather quickly.

Coastal scored 28 points against Temple a couple of weeks ago, and I believe the Monarchs defense is slightly better than the Owls' unit. That's not to say ODU's defensive numbers are all that legitimate; something has to give with the strength of schedule for Coastal thus far.

Expect a heavy dose of running plays from both offenses, which will help get the under home.
