Oregon State vs San Diego State Prediction, Picks, Odds, How to Watch for College Football Week 2

An intriguing matchup will occur on Saturday night in sunny San Diego, California.

The Oregon State Beavers have officially entered the post-Jonathan Smith and D.J. Ugeleleli era (probably for the better), starting the season with a victory.

They are hitting the road to take on the San Diego State Aztecs, who played in one of the most bizarre Week 1 matchups you'll ever see. The Aztecs are 6-point home underdogs for the matchup.

Let's see what we can uncover value in the team breakdown below for Saturday night's clash between the Beavs and Aztecs.

Oregon State Beavers Betting Preview: New Faces, Same Scheme

It is a new era for the Beavs, as their program was recently gutted in the offseason.

However, their rush-heavy offensive style did not seem to skip a beat last week.

The Beavs dismantled Idaho State 38-15, thanks to outstanding performances from their backfield. Running backs Jamious Griffin and Anthony Hankerson rushed for over 150 yards on the ground with two touchdowns each.

New starting quarterback Gevani McCoy only needed to throw ten passes in the win, but he did complete nine of them. We all knew how much former head coach Jonathan Smith loved to pound the rock, so the Beavs are sticking to that script despite his departure.

It is an interesting matchup for the Beavs, considering they are amongst the worst teams in the country in terms of returning production. However, San Diego State is not too far behind in that department either, as both teams were gutted in the offseason.

I expect the Beavs to stick to a ground-and-pound approach, and they'll most likely be counter-punched with a similar offensive philosophy. Stopping the run will be key, but the Aztecs were 134th in offensive explosiveness last season.

I do not think the Beavs will be challenged on the defensive side of the ball as many people perceive, and I believe they can win the battle in the defensive trench.

Our Action Network projections have the Beavs at -14.6 in the matchup, which is much higher than the current market number of -6.

San Diego State Aztecs Betting Preview: Pure Comedy

The second-half box score of the Aztecs game last week is pure comedy, as there were a ton of penalties and sloppy play. Both teams had over 200 yards in penalty yards.

Runningback Marquez Cooper rushed for over 200 yards on the ground last weekend, which is impressive regardless of the competition. The Aztecs ran for 254 and passed for 214, so overall, their offensive attack was balanced.

Last week's penalties were outrageous, so the Aztecs must play a much cleaner game to pull off a home upset. The Aztecs are a tough team to handicap because of the lost production in the offseason.

Their defense has its hands full against the Beavs, as I think they are in for a rude awakening in the trench. We all love to troll Collin Wilson about San Diego State Overs, but there's a method to his madness.

The Aztecs ranked 132nd in Rush Success Rate allowed last season, and with a unit that had some departures, the Beavs will have a field day on the ground.

The offense may be able to succeed on the ground, but ultimately, I can not trust the defense to make big stops when needed, and it may cost them the game.

I lean toward taking the Beavers here, but I don't like the splits of the current betting market.

Everyone thinks the Beavs will roll over the Aztecs. I will stay put on that front. Instead, I think a terrific pivot is the under.

I realize the Aztecs' defense may struggle to stop the run, but I think both offenses will run the football almost exclusively. The Beavs should run the ball better, but the clock should run for most of the game.

With some uncertainties for both offenses, I think it is safe to say we may see a much more conservative attack from both.

Oregon State vs San Diego State Picks: Under 54 (Play to 51.5)
